Cold November

I was reading this morning that it is the coldest November since 1976 in the Midwest. I do not know if that is true or not, but that was the fall/winter we built a house for my folks. I was helping with construction in buddies shed yesterday and it brought back those memories. My dad put a wood barrel burner in the basement to provide some warmth.

Well down here we have had 2 snow falls so far this year and both in Nov. which is not common so could well be true. First snow fall was 4 inches on Nov 16th and the other one was yesterday

Was it this cold in 76? I don't remember. I guess I was younger and tougher back then and didn't notice as much.

As I recall fall '76 and winter '77 was the year the chesapeake bay froze. Peoples were driving 4wd's right across. When the thaw came a couple went thru. My only transportation was a 500cc yamaha. Yup it was cold.

The weather guessers are saying this will be the 2nd coldest November on record. we had a little snow yesterday and that's the 2nd. I remember 1976 very well. It was my 1st year of college. The 10th of November I had to come home to help feed the cattle because of a 8" snow and Dad was in Kentucky. It snowed every holiday before Jan 1st 1977 and every Tuesday until Valentine's day. The 10th of January it was -18, that's the coldest I've seen here. I hope we're not in for that.

Last semester at Clemson in early 77 and went to 8 o'clock class. Started snowing heavy and by noon it was almost impossible to travel. I had chains for my truck and spent about 2 hours helping people get unstuck. Then decided I needed to start the 15 mile drive home. Got a hug from a good looking coed after getting her Camero to the top of a long hill. Don't know if I told my wife about that or not when I got home.

Gosh Ron, Sorry. But I think it was purple with red and black stripes all over. LOL
I really can't remember the color. I was too busy looking at the good looking girl in the passenger seat as I drove. I do remember she wanted to give me a kiss, but I settled for a hug.

National Weather Service predicted in early fall, we would have a warmer than usual November here on Northern plains, I think they must of had their thermometer hanging upside down. I think only two above normal days all month.

The fall of 76 I had an almost new 1070 Case trying to get the fall plowing done. I was plowing under snow at a time when other farmers thought mixing snow with the soil would sterilize the soil. I remember laughing at the cold looking out from a warm cozy cab, a new luxury at that time.

i remember back in the day we had snow cover by thanksgiving and didnt see the ground again until march, we had some snow here earlier in the month but its all gone now. Snow flurries this morning, was pretty, id rather have frozen ground than mud.

I was living in Miami in 1976. Our family had a tradition of walking around the block on Christmas Eve in short-sleeved shirts.

I really loved Miami, but business dictated a move back toward the North.

It's been pretty cool here in western Nebraska. I'd have to look back through my old notes but it must have been 91 or 92 that we picked every ear of corn on frozen ground. Finished up Christmas Eve. 1979 we picked a lot of corn in deep snow and that was before Thanksgiving. One thing about it. Every year is different. That is the only "normal" I've ever been able to observe.

David it is supposed to get up to 44 Sat. and 40 Sunday. Not too bad for this time of year. What little snow we have gotten so far is melting with each warm up.
