Diesels I saw on youtube

I saw some single cylinder Sime Kubota diesels on
youtube. They all seem to be used in asian
countries like Cambodia. They are hand cranked and
look like a very powerful and useful engine. Does
anyone know if they are available in the US.
Here's an interesting twist on their use.

There was one of those at a tractor/engine show a few years back It ran (empty) all weekend on what seemed to be only a cup of fuel.

With all the EPA emission standards they may not meet the requirements to sell them here. Mahindra has wanted to sell its small diesel pickup here but can't get EPA approval. Makes me wonder about how all these little Japanese mini-trucks are getting here. Either they're compliant, or there's a loophole.

The loop hole for the little trucks is that they are not street legal. I think some of them had the transmissions locked so you could only use one or two gears.

My neighbor bought a generator that is probably 7-8000 watts that has a diesel single cylinder in it. It's pretty slick and runs well. It is electric start. I am anxious to see how it starts in the cold. It definately taxes the battery starting it.

The mini trucks are older and not licensable in most states. Don't remember what year but older farm vehicles are exempt from emmision standards.

Course bringing in used farm equipment from India (home of Mahindra) brings about a whole host of other problems. I have personal experience in this area and not in a hurry to repeat it.

The Mahindra truck is like an S10 or Ranger size, not a "mini truck."

It wasn't that they couldn't meet EPA regulations because they could and did. EPA and safety regulations took away every advantage the truck had over the competition.

Conforming to US emissions and safety standards killed the fuel economy and added thousands to the price. Add in the "Chicken Tax" and you could buy a much nicer Ranger or Colorado cheaper.

The whole project was doomed from the beginning.
