Trailer suggestions

I'm currently looking at a PJ 20' + 5' 14k. 102 wide with low profile deck and 3 foldover ramps.

It will get pulled with 06 Chevy 3/4 ton.

I would like to be able to haul 1 big tractor (Deere 720d) or two smaller tricycle tractors. I think the trailer I'm looking at would be big enough.

I have also looked at bumper pull trailers too but it just doesnt seem like they balance as well.

Can anybody else recommend what to get or not to get?

Thanks

Not much real differences in commercial trailers,
they mostly use the same axles and lights so any
differences would mostly be personal preferences on
usability. I would not recomend PJ or Loadmax
trailers in the bumper type as they have a poor
frame design that leads to cracking. The PJ trailers
in gooseneck don't have the flaw which surprises me
since it's less significant with a gooseneck tonge
design. Makes me wonder why they would do a better
job on a more forgiving gooseneck. Anyway, that's
what I can advise without pictures of any particular
trailer you might be looking at.

Jon where do these cracks occur? I have run PJ 14k bp's for over 130,000 miles at near capacity and have never seen a crack...

I have that same trailer and pull it with a 3/4 ton also.
Regularly have it loaded at 12-14,000 lbs and have had no
issues in the ten years of owning it.

That trailer will do what you want it to do. It is the same dimensions as my 13 year old Travalong. If I had it to do over again, I would get a 25' plus 5'. Then I could easily haul 2 smaller tractors with narrow fronts OR wide fronts.

I've posted about this before, so unless someone wants the whole explaination with the pics, I'll just keep it simple. The problem is where the main frame makes the bend for the tongue. There needs to be a cross member right at the bend to keep the frame from flexing at the bend. On the PJ and Loadmax and at least one other brand they put that cross member behind the bend, this alows the frame to flex at the bend and eventually to fail. I will say the PJ trailer is better than the Loadmax and I've only seen the PJ trailers fail when they are pulled behind a heavy duty truck like a 1ton dually or f450/550 or even a dump truck or such when they max out the tongue weight for the trailer. I don't have any pics of the PJ trailers I've fixed, but I do have of a loadmax that I saw at a dealer. The loadmax was only a year or so old and since they made 2 design erors they are likely to fatigue crack with even light use.

Most manufacturers that I've seen have put a heavy cross member right at that bend so I really have a hard time understanding why some don't. This is pretty basic structural engineering stuff.

great trailer you just will have to carry a lot of
spare tires at that weight . all I can carry is 2
tricycle tractors, one weighs 7k and the other 3k
the trailer weighs 4700. each tire is rated at 3500
and 20% of the weight is on the truck , it's very
marginal . I have changed a lot of tires .

We have a 20' 14k, bumper, 83" inside the fenders 8 bolt wheels 2 axle brakes . The trailer weighs 3700 lbs empty and I have loaded another 7k on it and pulled with a 3/4 ton duramax 500 miles with no problem. Never second guess a trailer always go bigger when you purchase one .

Being a low profile , is the 102" width between the fenders or is that the overall deck width? Might want to also consider a 20+5 deck over gooseneck with pop-up ramps. From my experience, I believe you will like the way it pulls much better. I had a F-350 dually 4x4 with a 28ft low profile bumper pull and went to a F-250 20+5 gooseneck. If you have a gooseneck ball already in your bed maybe the dealer would let you try both?

My rig is what your contemplating. 14k 20+5 gooseneck with
3 individual spring loaded ramps and an 8k winch mounted up
high in the front.

It works perfect for what I do. Pay attention to your load
weight. I'm legal at about 9k payload with a 06 Dodge 2500
diesel.

I can load 2 Farmall super H's easily. 1st one backed on and
2nd driven on.

Personally; I would not want to pull something as heavy as your Deere on a bumper hitch. May get the trailer driving the truck. Much easier to balance the weight on the truck w/gooseneck. Loading 2 tractors on a 20ft. means the front tractor must be all the way forward. That can mean a good deal of weight shoving down 4ft. behind the axle. something to think about.

Hi
as guys have said watch the empty weight of goose neck trailer. My buddy had a trailer up here in Canada, was a lighter strong built trailer 14,000 gross. His neighbor had I believe a PJ 5 ft longer but same things for ramps on it.
That stupid thing was way heavier for the weight per foot of trailer. it was pretty well 2 small bags of sugar, and a chain and binder to hold the load on, and it was over weight. from what my buddy said when he borrowed it one day to move something a little bigger, than he wanted on his trailer for it's build.
he could haul more weight legally on his with the lighter build.
I'm hearing the same from quite a few guys. These modern trailers are way to heavy, and you can't haul enough on them for the size.
I have heard guys say if your on non commercial use and doing the odd runs. Buy a Kaufman, it's a lighter cheaper trailer, but if >you abuse it with big loads and a lot of high miles a week you won't like it!. I was going tolook at one, but the laws are getting so strict here with licences and DOT I quit towing tractors in the end.
Regards Robert

Thanks for all the good advice. I'm fairly sure that is the trailer I will buy.

Prawn Farmer low profile just means the frame is notched so the deck is as close as possible to tires. It is still a deckover.

Geographic differences I guess. The local PJ dealer here stocks 14K 102" low-pro deckover trailers in gooseneck form only. The 14K 102" wide bumper-pull low pro trailers have fenders and generally are referred to as car-haulers.

I have a PJ B5 in a 10000# rating 20' overall 2' of that is a dovetail. I can load a tractor from a hump in the yard or a shallow ditch with out getting out the ramps. If getting the flip up ramps I would get a straight deck.

FWIW. I got the best deal on my last PJ from Beckers in West Salem WI....$1800 less than locally. I just happened to be going out that way, so I picked one up. Would have picked up 2 or 3 but they won't let you license to haul with them in WI...no temporary plates available.
