Trying to figure out year of my John Deere B

I recently bought a John Deere B. The serial number plate is long gone. I took some pictures and hope someone can steer me to the correct year of this tractor.

well its the later model cause its got the starter , and that's also the long hood model.

I thought the single stick 6 speed didn't arrive till '47?The fully enclosed electric startflywheel and battery under the seatat 47 also.

IIRC, the serial # plate of a styled "B" would be on top of the main case, under the mag. In the photos, that area appears caked with dirt. I ASSUME you've by now scraped away the dirt and looked there?

I don't have my parts book handy. If you look in the parts book pay close attention to the angle iron frame serial number breaks and the ones where the style of oil filler / breather you have and that will get you as close as you can get.

Good day: INFO taken from JD PARTS CATALOGUE NO. PC-330 (3-60)

I have a '46 model electric start with lights, with a similar looking 3 speed hi/low transmission. My seat is different, drawbar is different, and oil fill/breather is different. I am guessing yours is earlier 41-42'ish.

Non reversable front wheels make it a pre 1944, and with the frame it has would probably be pre-war frame. My guess would be a 1941 or 1942.

First tractor I ever drove had every feature I see in that one.....including closed center straight bar Firestone tires, just like the one on the left wheel of the pictured tractor. That tractor was a nearly new late '41 B, I first drove it pulling a rubber tired wagon pulling a John Deere hay loader putting up loose hay in the summer of 1942. So I would believe yourtractor was built in that era, 1941-1942.

One thing I meant to mention was the seat on your tractor is a Monroe after market seat made after the end of WWII. These seats were a popular replacement sold by many dealers of virtually all makes and models of tractors are were quite an improvement over the regular seats that came on new tractors. In 1947-48 era John Deere fitted their newer model row crop tractors with a battery box mounted cushioned seat and backrest up grade while International factory fitted their Farmall models with these Monroe type seats. Many other makes came with Monroe seats too in this era.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I was leaning towards 1941 but I wasn't sure. Wish they would have cast the serial numbers like the part numbers. She is going to be a big project but couldn't let the scrap man get her. I am sure I will be picking everyone's brains again, not only for this tractor but also my 1951 John Deere B. Thanks again.

If you look closely at the frame picture the descriptions are cut off the page but you can still see the words "cast iron" this will show the ones with the cast iron frame. This fellows tractor was made right after those serial numbers listed.

A Guru who used to post on here and on the JD forum had casting codes and serial numbers from a bunch of A tractors, he might have some of the same data for a B. The head lights appear to be original and are not the earlier flat lens style. The 6 speed and non-reversible front wheels all point too a 41 or 42 model. As Dukester said the seat is not original, but is a very common aftermarket Monroe seat. Steiners have parts for the seats.
