1946 Farmall A will not start

I have a 1946 farmall A it cranks over but wont start I have fuel going to the carb. it runs on starting fluid but then shuts off after you quit spraying it in there. tractor ran great 4 years ago I've taken the carb apart cleaned it out completely all the ports and jets in the carb and fuel lines are clean and free of debris. when we pull it to start it wants to run but soon as you put the clutch in it quits. i'm completely lost now, it has good spark i've put gas in the spark plug holes and cranked it over and it fired up then died. it has good compression and suction when i pulled the carb off and put my hand over the intake and cranked it over. I also bent the floats up a bit to get more fuel in the bowl of the carb.

Check make sure your air cleaner tube is not
clogged with some kind of critter homesteading.

An Engine needs 4 things to run. Fuel, Air,
Compression & Ignition source. When you pull the
plugs out and pour a little gas in the cylinder
you're also letting in new air to burn and it
runs.

Did you remove the jets from the carb and use
carb cleaner to spray thru them to make sure
they're open. What you're describing sounds like
it's not getting fuel. Which is expected after
sitting four years.

air cleaner is clean it has the mushroom cap on it also the tractor has been sitting in a climate controlled garage. I did clean the jets out used carb cleaner and everything is free flowing when sprayed with carb cleaner. I drained the fuel tank of the old gas in there filled it with new and even cleaned the screen on the fuel bowl out cleaned the fuel line. for some reason its just not getting fuel in the cylinders. and when i sprayed starting fluid on the air cleaner it ran nothing shot out the exhaust pipe so i know that that is clean and free. so for some reason its not getting fuel. i put all new gaskets in the carb as well so theres no chance of it getting air in the carb other than through the air cleaner. What doesn't make since to me is when i pull start it it runs only because the engine is spinning fast enough but the throttle level you can open it wide open or shut it and it doesnt make a difference. also you can put the kill switch off and still no difference it still half @$$ runs. i know for sure its in time no plug wires are on wrong.

Something still not right with the carb. Recheck the main circuit. Since it won't idle or run open throttle, sounds like nothing is getting through the main. You can google carb theory, find circuit diagrams in images, see what's supposed to be happening.

Even though you say the fuel lines are clean did you disconnect the line and check for fuel flow? The float level is not a function of tuning.

Disconnect the gas line at the carburetor and see if there's a full stream of gas from the tank. If you have a full stream of gas remove the tube fitting where your gas line connects and look for a screen that may be plugged with crud. Hal

Yes when I pulled the carb off i still had the fuel line hooked up to the tank and it had good flow through the line. when i drained the carb bowl with the tine hooked up I could see good flow coming in to the sight glass on the bottom of the tank

Just because you can spray carb cleaner threw the passage ways does not mean there isn't some rust or dirt still in there. Carb cleaner is under pressure but your gas flow is not. You need to use a small wire or as I do use a torch tip cleaner tool and poke out all passage ways. If you hold your hand over the air intake will it run or try to run?? If yes you missed something in that carb. If it has the non-adjustable main jet remove the cover plug form it and make sure you have a good flow of gas out of it if you do not then it is clogged up

Did you remove the jets to clean behind them?
You might try boiling the carburetor in laundry soap water to loosen up the residue. After boiling the carburetor they come apart much easier and clean up easier.

When I hold my hand over the intake it cranks over and sucks my hand down on it pretty hard but doesn't try to run just cranks over. I forgot to mention also when I cleaned the carb i soaked it in lacquer thinner then took air compressor and blew all the junk out of it then sprayed carb cleaner in it as well... there was some crud that got sprayed out by the air compressor through all the passageways in there. the plunger that the floats attached to i cleaned that up really good it had some residue on it but now it clean. I appreciate all the responses back, when I get home I'll have to use a small wire brush and clean it out more and I'll go from there and let everyone know what happens. And if that doesn't work I'll buy a new carb kit and go from there with all new internals.

I would take your carb to a shop that uses the new
Ultra-Sound machine to clean it. Most shops are
using them instead of the liquid dip tanks to clean
carburetors.

Unless you remove the jets you will never get it truly clean. You may fuss with it until it runs but that does not mean it is clean. Lacquer thinner will not even come close to dissolving the evaporated gas residue. It takes stuff that will remove skin from your hands and it does not come in a spray can. NAPA's carburetor cleaner in a gallon can with a basket would be one good one. Unless you want to learn how to really clean and rebuild a carburetor it will most likely be cheaper to take it to a carburetor shop than to buy the necessary supplies.

Check your throttle linkage to make sure everything is moving. Try moving the rod that attaches to the carburetor by hand when it starts to see if the engine will rev up. Could the magneto or distributor have gotten turned so that it is slightly out of time? I would mark where the magneto/distributor is set and experiment by turning it a little.
