Can anyone tell me the timing specs on a 404 IH motor,also the vacuum advance is moving in the distributer but does not change the sound of the motor at all,any sugestions?Ive looked everywhere

Put the dist on a strobe machine and check it out. Dont see why the sound would change.

Have you looked for an emissions decal on the valve covers that should have the timing info?

Check your centrifugal advance to see that it moves freely, and pins and other parts are intact, then verify it's operation with a timing light.

Inspect the linkage connecting the vacuum advance to the breaker plate, and see if something has fallen apart.

You can use a hand vacuum pump to operate the diaphragm, and watch for movement of the breaker plate with the engine stopped/distributor cap removed.

As far as base timing, I have a truck manual at the shop that should have the exact spec, I will check later, and post it, if I find it.

(I'll bet it's in the 4º to 6º range.)
