Allis Chalmers D-14 Tractor

I have a friend that is considering an AC D-14. He called and asked me for advise and he is a long distance from where I live.
He knows nothing about tractors.
I have owned and worked on Many different brands of tractors but have little knowledge about this particular tractor.
A few questions:
What HP is this tractor?
What type PTO setup does it have and is it live?
Any particular problems with this machine that need to be checked?
He will try and send some pictures.

Try tractordata.com as that has info on most tractors. Take a mechanic along to inspect and drive the tractor. Check the oil pan for any antifreeze. Hal

Good tough tractor mostly, the 2 speed hand clutch takes a little getting used to but my wife mastered the one on my D19 in a few minutes of operating it.Other than normal tractor problems like worn out engine, bad tires etc be sure to try all the gears going down hill to make sure they don't jump out as they were prone to do that if shifted rough.

HP is right around 40 pto. PTO is live via the hand clutch, it is not independent. Hand clutch provides 2 speeds in each forward and reverse gear, plus the middle position is where pto and hyd are live, stopping wheel motion. Foot clutch disconnects all power. Like other poster said, rough gear shifting causes especially third gear to fail.

Cut my teeth on one as a teenager, baling for the neighbor. Good tractor- I think 40 HP might be pushing it, but haven't looked at tractor data or Nebraska tests. I liked the "power director" (their name for the 2 speed hand clutch) a lot for baling. With hand clutch in middle position (neutral), depress foot clutch and put PTO and transmission in gear. Let out foot clutch, get the PTO driven implement going. Then push hand clutch, and away you go. If you're getting a clog, just pull hand clutch to middle position until it clears, then away you go again. If you're getting into a heavier windrow, pull hand clutch from high to low, without stopping the baler.

Very smooth running engine. 3 point is a plus, but the earlier ones had "snap coupler" instead. Worked OK, but only works for AC implements, which are hard to find.

2nd the motion on checking 3rd gear, going downhill, to see if it jumps out. I don't know how hard the fix is- guys on the AC board would probably know.

I've had one for twenty years, and it's a handy little tractor. It does all of my tedding, raking and odd jobs. They come with a snap coupler hitch, which is specific to Allis implements, but a three point hitch kit is available.
It will only have a single one way hydraulic remote, and probably doesn't have power steering

I owned a 14 and really liked it. The Power Director hand clutch
made it a great baling tractor. It lets you go back and forth
between high range and low range or neutral on the go without
stopping the PTO. Also works great when plowing. When you hit
a hard spot, you can pull the hand clutch back into low range
and keep on going.

The down side is that the D series tractors are notorious for
jumping out of gear. That's because people try to shift on the go
and wear off the edge of the gears. I replaced 3rd in mine
shortly after I got it and never had any more problems. Also, the
hand clutch can get out of adjustment an jump into neutral.

The 14 only came with the snap coupler, which works fine if you
have the equipment. If not, after market 3 points are available.
One of the best things about the Allis is they have great draft
control systems.

Dang, now I wish I had mine back!

I just talked to the owner and he said it jumps out of third gear sometimes, smokes a little and it has the original snap coupler hitch and no implements are included.
Thanks for all the good info but Looks like I will pass.
