Which plow would be better for gardening?

I cover cropped all my spots in winter wheat. My plan is next spring to combine the wheat to save the seed, then square bale the straw to put down as mulch. Would it be better to use my disc plow to leave some of the stubble mixed with the dirt on top of the soil to cut back on weeds or use my moldboard plow and completely turn it under? If you are wondering yes my gardens are very large areas and the combine is a small pull type.

depends some on what you plan to put in garden- for most people the moldboard plow is still choice for garden that is likely to have root crops mixed with varying sized seeds, denser planting and soil amendments that need turn under- as mulch, raw manures, half finished compost, stable bedding. Less deep root crops, use of completely finished, sifted compost and some water retention needed would favor the disk and chisel less turnover plowing for shallower seed beds that gets later mulch. Here wheat is harvested for grain in late July, after garden needs to be in. If cutting the wheat and removing the straw I just hit with a S-tine cultivator, Rips it deep enough, keeps it level and smooth and mixes everything together. Gardens are nice soil with all the manure, leaves and compost added over the years, drag with a harrow and plant....James

For gardens aren't you to till or turn under the wheat cover crop while it is still green for green manure ?

I could do that but I mainly cover crop for erosion control.

I just remember reading the troy bilt tiller booklet about how great green manure is to be ?

I planted barley for a cover crop. I plow it under in the Spring. Its about a foot tall. I will mow it off if its too tall. Hal

I use a mold board plow that came with a Viking garden tractor in 1960. I paid $15.00 for the tractor, plow, disk and cultivator. I now use it on my Wards garden tractor. Hal

It's really hard to harvest wheat when it has no heads like it will be when it's time to plant a garden in the spring.

I mold board mine, disc, drag and plant sweet corn and several
kinds of beans and peas. I like the way it covers it all up. Makes a
clean looking field. Not a big fan of tilling.

Going off of memory from when I was younger it seems that we would usually combine wheat around the end of may. Everything I have looked at online suggests that would be about right on the time frame.

I disc the garden well in the fall, then moldboard plow, disc, spring tooth harrow before planting in the spring. I only use a rototiller for cultivation. Discing in the fall cuts up leftover plants, moldboard plowing buries everything.

My garden is only about 30x30. My cover corp is a
foot of leafs. I will clean the leafs off in
spring with FIL. To plant I use 12 inch post
hole digger on tractor. I see no need to turn the
ground over between rows where weeds grow. After
I plant a few tomatoes and peppers, I put bagged
leafs from last fall between rows, so no weeding
required. Back fill holes with last year's mulch
made from horse poo, hay, grass clippings, leafs
and lime. Clean garden off in Fall again and
start over with more leafs. No tilling, no
plowing, no weeding, just plant and pick. And I
wonder why I have two tillers.

I planted annual ryegrass this spring for a fallow field this year (foreground), and cereal rye this fall (background)...the balance I spread manure and plow under right away. Just finished up Sunday...50 loads of manure and about 5 hours plowing. Annual ryegrass will get plowed under in the spring, plowed ground gets a pass with the chisel plow and rotovator before seeding.
