drained the oil in the tractor and the radiator too, Had everything going very organized. The tractor holds 7 qts oil,had 2 gallon can of oil,had an empty clean qt,filled that up put it in the shed, now eveything is going smooth, took off the old oil filter, lubed the gasket on the new one,put it on,closed the radiator, put in the antifreeze very carefully,,,procceded to pour in the 7 qts of oil,,,,,,what did the dope forget to do? put oil drain plug back on,,,,didnt pour all the oil in before I caught it,but,,,,what a dope,,,anyone ever done it,or will admit to it?Or am I the only one stupid enough ?

Nope, you're not alone. Did you ever double gasket the oil filter. Try it sometime. It'll leak like a water hose running.

Well I haven't made that mistake yet but I did forget to put the drain plug in the back of the boat when I launched-oh about 30 years ago. Haven't forgot that!
Figured it out when the boat seem a little bit lower then normal. After putting the plug in. What to do? It was too heavy and would take too much time to go get the trailer so quickly turned on the bilge pump and untied it and got under way. Then pulled the plug again and put on power. When she came up on a plane the water drained very quickly and put the plug back in. That was a really strong boat, 20 feet long with a 283 cu. in. small block, made about 250 hp.
I NEVER forgot the plug again.

Was it $10 a quart Mobil 1 (bought at the wrong place because it was needed NOW)?

That's what I dumped THROUGH the wife's Jeep a few months back the same way you did.

Probably a good flush, though!

Put a full 5 gal can in my semi once before I climbed down and saw it running down the driveway. Was the last time I changed my own oil.

Its a whole lot better than putting the plug in and then forgetting to put the oil in before you cranked it up.Thats a lot more expensive than a few qts of oil

I think that most of us have done that at least once........
Everyone makes mistakes, RARE are the folks that will admit making one.

Wet feet from "filling rad" LOL did that at least once! get distracted or thinking ahead to next job.
Ypop

yep, did it once on a car engine way back when I was 16.
over a ditch, changing oil, very expensive to a kid, race'n oil lol.
remember that every time I change engine oil now.
Once lately, with a tractor rearend. letting em drain overnight will bite ya sometimes.

So afraid of being an airhead and starting one without oil now that I am old, I tie a rag around the key or steering wheel when I drain engine oil. no exceptions, rag stays on til I dump oil in.

don't feel bad. I worked in a garage for a while in my younger days. I did that to a customer's car, forgot to install the drain plug. On a cement floor it doesn't take much oil to make a big mess. I changed oil in one of my tractors years ago. l forgot to tighten the drain plug. While mowing I saw a dark streak on the ground on the part I had already mowed. Then it hit me it was from my tractor. I caught it in time. Stan

BTDT once when I was 16 changing the oil in a pickup. I went 40 years before I did it again and I did it twice.....this year  Once on a ford tractor and once on a backhoe.

Several years ago i was going to change the oil in my car at my father in laws house, which he was a mechanic for buick for 30 years plus. I was on his concrete driweway and he and the mother in law were leaving for the weekend. His very last words to me as he was backing out the driveway was Boy dont you get oil all over my driveway. Well while the oil was draining i go inside and had some beers with the girlfiend/wife and a couple friends, comeout an hour later started back on the car as i had put 2 quarts in and was working on the third i look down and oil was all around my feet. Yep forgot the plug.. instead of wiping the oil up with rags and such like a smarter man would have i took the hose and washed it into the grass of the front yard. Yes it killed all the grass the size pick-up truck bed in the mans front yard. after the butt chewing a few days later he made me dig up all the dirt haul it off and put good dirt back in and plant new grass. I think about that from time to time durning my life and it always makes me smile. So no your not stupid nor I but it will always bring you a smile when you tell the story to someone.

Overhauling my JD H any years ago. got interrupted about 39 times, but put the head on, torqued the nuts, and found the rods and pistons laying on the bench. never did it again!!

I didn't forget to put the plug in, I forgot where I put the plug. I was draining the oil on the tractor when my daughter came and got me to answer the phone. When I returned I could not find the plug. About a month later I found the plug and finished changing the oil. A couple of weeks ago I changed the oil in the 03 Chevy pickup. If you ever changed the oil in one of these you know you have to be quick as the oil shoots out about 3 feet. Well I was so proud of myself that I did not spill one drop of oil on the floor. That was until I poured in the new oil and overflowed the funnel.

I think everyone that has changed there own oil has done that. When I change oil in my tractors I like to let them drain out real good. I always take the coil wire off the tractor and wired it to the oil container so that no one could start the tractor with no oil in it. It works for me.

Earlier today, I forgot to put the hydraulic oil level plug back in place before starting my tractor. I didn't loose much oil, but the leaking oil had me worried for a second. My only excuse is that I was excited about running it for the first time since I started the restoration 2 years ago.

As many times as I have done both services, I have to admit I have left the oil drain plug out, or the petcock on the radiator open more than once.

I had that happen when my wife was in the shop. She noticed it and said I think you forgot something.I looked at her and in a calm voice said,no I didn't ,I'm flushing out the pan.

If you can't dazzle' em with brilliants, baffle' em with bu#$@!&t.

If these things didn't happen we'd run out of things to talk about.

Almost did it again. Vowed to always check old filter for gasket. Changed oil in backhoe and forgot for a minute. Got old filter from trash. Sure enough no gasket. Checked and sure enough two gaskets. Had a 57 Ford that ran that way for miles. Blew all the oil out late one night. Had to walk home! :) Vic

Larry we all have done that. I did a worse one here last year. Remember I am a JD man. On just about every tractor I own the fuel tank is in the front and the radiator cap behind it.

I was changing a water pump on a neighbors Ford 4000. I had drained all the antifreeze out and flushed the block out. Grabbed the new anti freeze, funnel and proceeded to dump the first gallon in the diesel fuel tank. Got to take the tank off and flush it out then.

It just keeps getting more and more fun as I get older.

You too??? I did the same this Spring, first time ever. Gained some brush-burning fuel by doing that.

I changed the oil in wifeys car last week. Stuffed a bucket under the car that just gave me room to take off and put on the plug. So proud! Didn't spill a drop on the concrete. Then backed the car up to pull out the ramps and forgot to pull the bucket full of used oil out from under the car. You guessed it, mashed and rolled the bucket full of nasty oil across the concrete. Spilled every drop. But I did put on the plug.

Was doing engine transplant on my Mobile Hilton. Had engine on stand in garage, decided to spin the oil pump before installing distributer, just to check things out.
Put the pan on, plug in place, filled with oil, spin pump with 1/2 in drill. Oil really sprayed all over when I forgot to attach hose to filter.

Saw a guy back his trailer into the water at the ramp, slid the boat off into the water and got busy putting stuff away in the truck and talking to whoever was with him - while his boat kept sinking deeper into the water!

With a lot of help from other people waiting to unload their boats, they drug the boat up on the trailer far enough for him to haul it out of the water to let it drain. Bet he didn't forget to put the plug in after that episode.

When a person states that they are "Stupid",I usually correct them by saying, "Foolish". Remember, there is a cure for foolish and ignorance but Stupid is terminal.

I have never done anything that stupid. I did work on a transfer switch for over an hour. Because it would not transfer. Then I noticed the transfer motor switch was turned off. Then there was the time. I moved my left hand so I would not smash it with the car door. So I then smashed my right hand.Or the time I got out of dads truck while it was still moving.

But I never forgot a drain plug.

Not me but my nephew (who is a cop) was visiting and we were talking about cars and he daid that when he got home(several hundred miles) he was going to trade in his car because it was using oil about a quart every 500 miles. I thought that was highly unlikely so I went out to look at the engine. As I approach the car I notice a puddle under the engine so I crawled under the car and shurnuff, the plug was loose It was so loose it's a wonder it was still in. Seems he had oil canged at a Jiffy Lube several months prior and the oil use started about then. When I asked about the oil puddles he said he never looked under the car, ever. And he still is a sergeant on the police force. Make you wonder some times.

Some years ago my cousin broke his right arm and had it in a cast that was held out from his body so doing anything was hard. His 96 4x4 Powerstroke needed and oil change bad so I told him I would do it for him (this was in 97). Went to his shop and he had just got back from the Doctor so the truck was already backed in. He said the oil and filter are on the bench and get the big oil pan. I grabbed the big one, Or so I thought! Well you guessed it a 10 quart pan didn't hold 14 quarts! I had never changed oil in a Powerstroke before so I didn't know how much oil was in it. I had a nice mess to clean up before I could finish the oil change. I only did that once! Bandit

When my brother was based in North Carolina one of the fellows owned a jeep. Real nice guy but a real city boy. One weekend he decided to change engine oil so he pulled out on a sand dune, dropped the transmission plug till drained and then put five quarts in the engine. I don't remember which gave him problems first, I think it was the transmission that he had to replace. An expensive lesson.

Not sure you know it, but you just called a bunch of us stupid.....LOL!

Just write it off as the high cost of an education. I've got myself to the point now where I'll crawl under whatever it is I'm changing oil in, pull the plug, let the oil drain, and stay there, with the drain plug still in my hand. When it quits dripping, I'll put the plug back in and crawl out from under whatever... That accomplishes TWO things. I DON'T forget the plug, and I only have to crawl under ONCE. The latter has become more of an issue as I get older.

Don't worry JD Seller. No one owns the patent on stupid. It is in all of us, a genetic thing I believe. As far as the post goes the only thing unique is that he told us and anyone who sees his post about his mistake and therefore his natural human condition. In other word he is just like the rest of us except for me. I never make mistakes. I thought I did once but I was wrong.

oh yea you ever done this, Fixed flat on wifes mail vehicle threw tire back on another customer came in. guess what i forgot, drove out shop to park and you guess it wheel fell off. be while for hear end of that one of course.

Stopped at some friends' place in Florida once, and they needed a few trees cut. So I added fuel and chain oil to his little saw, but the darn thing wouldn't start. He took it to the shop next day, and they informed him some yahoo had put oil in the gas tank and gas in the oil tank. Fairly easy fix for the saw, but not sure I can be fixed....

No but I grabbed a plastic gallon of oil and started to dump some into the radiator before I realized my anti- freeze and oil have trhe same color plastic bottles. Now my wife is still looking for the turkey baster I used to suck the oil out of the radiator.

Just bought my first Farmall M and had loosened the bolt holding the oil filter since I was going to change it. Forgot about it 3 days later and fired up the tractor and pumped out about 1/2 the oil when I caught it.
