Air Horns on a Pickup

The horn on my truck wouldn't scare a mouse, I would like to upgrade to something closer to a semi-truck horn. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks
Rich

J.C Whitney, Harbor Freight and host of others have the electric over air horns. Real cheap and will give you the blast of an Air Horn.

You can get a kit but I don't know where to direct you, probably the internet somewhere. The kit I saw came with an electric compressor, two gallon tank, electric air valve, wiring and of course the horns. The horns sounded like a freight train. Jim

I would not go much bigger than a semi horn. I know a guy that has a train locomotive air horn. He has to be really careful with it because it is loud enough that at point blank range, it could cause someone hearing loss. They were really not made to honk right in someones ear. Can cause perminant damage if you did.

There's lots of times I'd like to have one on my motorcycle instead of the sickly VW Beetle sounding one it has now. TDF

years ago we put 12 volt in a 53 chevy pickup but left the original horn -- that thing would scare a train right off the track -- he he

Get one from a Diesel Locomotive..they really work.!!
One stone truck here has one and he only uses it IF he really needs it.!!

It WILL make ya spill your coffee..!!

Maybe mount them on your Hood or Roof..

As stated, anywhere from JC Whitney to Harbor Freight has air horns. As you might suspect, you the more you pay, the better horn you will get--HF's horns start at around 15 bucks, but you can easily stick a grand or more into a good locomotive-type setup. The lower-end ones will not have enough air for more than a quick toot, and will usually only have one or maybe two horns. Higher dollar ones will included multiple horns--the perceived volume goes up as the chord deepens, so 3, 5, and even more horns are common in more elaborate setups. Of course, that means you need more air, which means a bigger compressor, and often a reserve tank as well, but you could raise a deaf man from the dead with some of the higher-end setups, to the point that you might be wise to check local laws before sticking big bucks into something that will cost you bigger bucks the first time someone gets irate because you made them hit their head on the car roof when you "got their attention". Plenty of plans on Youtube and elsewhere to make your own as well if you're so inclined. For myself, I have an old 60's-era bullhorn that my father and one of my uncles had went halves on, neither one of them having the 15 bucks it cost at the time to buy it outright. They passed it back and forth for a number of years and I finally ended up with it. I can remember calling cows with it when Dad had it mounted on his '67 Impala, and I've had it on several vehicles since, including my current truck. Gets a smile and a chuckle from kids of all ages, and will still bring a whole herd of cows to to the fence to see who that feller with the musical voice is!

Another source is a marine supply like e and b marine mail order. Better quality and longer lasting than automotive aftermarket. Figure 75 to a hundo for a nice set.

Fire Department ambulances have them, and they do put out. Anymore I see them on them below the front bumper, and they may not be quite as loud as the engines, but they aint far behind. Might want to reach out to an ambulance manufacturer and see what you can work out. For pickups, or based off of pickups, they sure do get ones attention.

Might get you a ticket or few though

they make air horns for 12 volt vehicles but since im used to the real thing they sound corny, you can rig up a set of real air horns but you will need at a minimum the air tank to run them and a way to pull the lanyard to blow them, assuming you can make all the fittings air tight and charge the tank up with your compressor, it will last for several horn sessions, if you have to shock people right down to the core of their being there is a set of truck "train" horns that are rated at 132 decibels, [ a 747 airliner sitting on the runway with its engines at full throttle is putting out 94 decibels to give you a idea how loud those horns are,] there not cheap either prepare to part with some serious bucks, also be aware some places have laws against having a set of air horns on a civilian vehicle or anything smaller than a heavy truck

I have a Harbor Freight oooga horn on my H Farmall. Hid the 12v horn under the hood, wired it to a scooter battery in the tool box (tractor has 6v). Holds a charge for a long time.

When I honk it I get lots of smiles, waves and a thumbs up. Some people stop and look around for an old car. Fun to have.

I have installed them (dual set up) it takes a bunch of air and they are short winded... The first kit came with a compressor and pancake air tank it was good for one short blast then a long wait period before you could sound them off again... So we added a semi air tank you could blow it 2 are 3 times then have to wait for the compressor to fill the tanks again... It did not take them long to burn up the compressor... The compressor was the same compressor used on air suspension used on Ford crown vic's and Mercury town cars... We tried a single set up but it did not satisfy her.... It was a $4/500 (may have been 7/8 hundred) dollar experiment but those long tube mounted horns on the top of the cab did look cool...

The loudest stock horn's are found on late 80's to early 90's Buick's... they will get your attention... I inspected a 94 buick lesabre last week when I toted the horn I told the owner horn works so good she did not need any brakes...

I see Amazon has some, search air horns, then click air horns under automotive. Wouldn't necessarily buy there, but some have a few reviews to read through at least, might have more reviews or at least different than the other stores (granted a lot of the reviews are useless, but they might help sort out bad models).

RCP, Google... Wolo Air Horns, I think you find what you are looking for! they also have small compact air tanks and pumps too in a Kit form to get you going!

Loud enough air horns can stop a brawl. Recently there was a big after-game fight in the parking lot between OK football fans and texas (UT, i think, but not sure), a real donnybrook, punches being thrown, people going down, etc. Anyway, a bus driver broke it up by driving up to the crowd in his bus blowing his super-loud air horns. Everybody just stood around like a bunch of dumbfounded cows. Funnier than heck. I saw the video on facebook but you might be able to find it on google. Can't post it from here, sorry.

Yeh, I've got one of those too, got it mounted on my little Yanmar Landscape Tractor. Lots of fun, particularly watching peoples response. LOL
