Louisiana harvest (lots of pictures)

I go to Dallas about once a month and get to see the crops across our state.
Went on labor day weekend and the crop harvest had just started with corn. Beans were still green and you could see very little white on the cotton.
Went back this past weekend and took some pictures.

Did not see any corn. It is 100% harvested from what I saw. Saw lots of bare fields where corn had been.

Some where even growing back with weeds and what looked like volunteer corn or growing back from the roots.

Beans are all dried. Some have been harvested; some were being harvested; and some were still in the fields.

I saw one small field of cotton that had been picked but most was still in the fields.

Some even has a ways to go before it will be ready.

The sugar cane harvest has started. It will be Christmas or New Years before they have all the cane harvested.

The short stuff has been harvested and is growing back for next years crop. The tall stuff needs to be harvested yet.

While I did not see many rice fields (did not go to that part of the state) everyone I saw was harvested.

The port of Baton Rouge. Just one of many elevators where they load ships with corn and beans.

Beans ,corn, and rice are just about all gathered up here in the northeast parishes. The sweet potato farmers are busy and I noticed that what little cotton is planted is almost ready to harvest.

John in La:

THANKS for all the pics. I haven't been down in that part of the Country since 1959. I especially liked the pics of the Cotton. We used to grow a lot of Cotton here in the Pahrump Valley, in fact we had the only Cotton Gin in the entire state of Nevada. The LAST crop of Cotton was in 1986, and it was only 10 acres. They let the bushes grow 3-4 feet high and harvested the Cotton by hand. My wife & I were driving by when they were harvesting and I stopped and picked a branch for her that had 5 Cotton balls on it.

No more Cotton in Pahrump. The Cotton Gin is gone now and has been replaced with a large Hotel / Casino . :>(

Nice pics John, thanks for posting. I've never been around coton, but while I was down there during the Catrina thing I saw a farmer picking cotton and stopped to watch. He was a real nice guy and gave me a ride in his harvestor. That was a great day for me. I always like to see jow other floks do things. I hope someday to be able to get a close up of the rice growing in Arkansas. I've watched that process from the road a lot and would like a closer look some day.

Nice pics John. Is that water standing in the rice fields. If so, from irrigation or rain?

Question: Sugar Cane Aphids invaded us this year. Came in around mid July. Understand they came from La. via Ak. last year and into N. TX. this year.

In about 3 days they had completely ruined my sudan-sorghum cross hay regrowth for the second cutting. Tops of leaves were slick and gooey, what had been beautiful green leaves were mostly yellow, bottom of leaves were covered with little brown bugs.

What do you guys use to control them and since I haven't renewed my applicator's license in a while being I and retired and my acreage is under the minimum, do you know if the product is off the shelf or requires a permit. I know TX and LA are different states but probably share restricted chemicals.

Thanks,
Mark

Interesting to see cotton fields... kinda reminds me of an early snow on a bean field. :)

Thanks for posting some southern photos.
