Ford 1 ton lug question

Not tractor related but I know this is the place for answers. I have a 1996 f 350 dump that I am saving from the rust demons, trying to jazz it up a bit with some chrome wheel covers. The lugs that are currently on it wont let the covers lay flat on the wheel because they have washer like things built into them Can I just put regular lug nuts on it ??

No, those lugs are specific to the wheel system. There are simulators that will fit those wheels. The simulator will go under the nuts and them caps go over them.

Our super duty wrecker has those style wheels. The simulators we have on the truch screw on to the short threads sticking out past the lug nuts.

Well you can remove the washer type nuts if you like broken wheels. LOL That style of nut is required to spread the load out on the wheel. A smaller nut will not do that and the wheel could easily break.

They make simulators that will fit those type of wheels. I would bet that you have the ones for a pickup or lighter duty truck.

I would just blast and paint the wheels on that truck.

You can always swap on the 1-piece lugnuts Dodge used up til 93.... No, wait, I can't do that to you, it takes 350 ft-lb to overcome the friction of the solid nut on the face of the wheel instead of the 140 or 150 yours take.
I'd clean those up and paint them. Think I'd go with grey instead of white.

Ford and Dodge both used coined wheels that you used 2 tapered lugnuts to center them, then replaced them with the regular ones. Then Ford went to hub-centric (vs lug-centric) wheels and 2-piece lugnuts, and Dodge kept the same set-up.

The old set-up depends on friction between the hub and wheels and lugnuts to hold them centered. Doesn't always work the best.

The one-piece lugnut Dodge used required over 300 lb-ft to overcome the friction between the lugnut and wheel. The Ford lugnut takes about 150. Much better choice, even with the older wheels.
