1935 B Gaskets Needed

Hi all, well, we can't seem to come up with a head gasket for my 35 B... Where do you guys get them?? I found one place that has a complete engine set for $130, and JD themselves wants $80 for the head gasket alone.. Total bs in my opinion!! There has to be one cheaper!! BUT, where is that place?

I NEED to have a head gasket, and would like to have a manifold gasket, but it is a possibility to make one of those.

Also, if we have to make a manifold gasket, what material do you guys suggest that we use?!!? Thanks, Bryce

What about Fel Pro FS 7381 S. It says its for model B up to serial number 59999. It's a full gasket set.

You can get them right here from YT for $66 to $73 depending on serial number of your tractor. Other than that mother Deere is the only other place I know. Ebay has some listed, but the price isn't much better.

Go to Ebay.com and put John Deere model B head gasket in the search box. You will want your serial number so you get the right one.

Greg

I tried that, they don't have the one I need!!!!

This site doesn't either, they have them for Early Styled B's and Late Styled B's, I have an Unstyled B, serial number 8155. No one I can find has them!

Bryce: I usually try to keep out of things like this but your post just does not set well with me.

1) Your on an old tractor forum that is provided FREE by a lady that SELLS old tractor parts. You coming on here and trying to find CHEAP parts is like being asked over to supper and then complaining about the cooking.

2) Your working on a 79 year old tractor. That is about FIVE times your age. BE glad you can find ANY parts for something that old.

3) You will use more of the complete gasket kit that you think. You need the head gasket, lead sealing washers, intake and exhaust gaskets, carb gaskets, water housing gasket, and the valve cover gasket. Maybe your going to use Silicone on much of this stuff but I do not recommend it.

Maybe a way to look at it is this way. $193.00 for a complete set on this very site. $125 for providing you with a place to post on just about every day and then $68 for the parts you need ???

Here is what I DO know; it would be classer than whining on here about how HIGH parts are every where else but on THE site your using for FREE.

Just my two cents worth. Maybe not how many think. Think/look at the BIG picture. Does that cheap $130 gasket place provide you with a forum to asked old tractor questions???

I hate to say it, but Deere may be the only place. I know they are high, but production numbers are low these days and drive the cost up due to machine setup and minimum run sizes.

Greg

You might try the John Deere section of this board. You may get lucky and somebody may have one they are willing to part with for a good price.

Greg

I tend to agree with you, JD. There seems to be much bragging about how cheaply these things have been obtained. What would happen if the merchants that supply this nice site to us suddenly decided to brag about how many of us they sold parts for at a profit? I know that wouldn't set well, either. My humble opinion. Mike

Many old gaskets if you know how can be used again. I have a TRUE 1935 JD-B owners manual and it tell a person how to do so and I have used more then one used head gasket and it has worked just fine if you know the tricks in doing so

I don't mean to be nasty, but please read below...

I HAVE tried looking on this site, and I DID NOT SEE a plain gasket OR a complete gasket set, for an Unstyled 1935 B, with the serial number of 8155.

Now, PLEASE if you feel the need to share your 2 cents, at least show some proof and try to be supportive!!! I am not challenging you, or saying that you are wrong. As far as I am concerned, you are one of the people on this forum that is always very helpful! WHERE do you see the set?? If it is on here at a reasonable price, then I will for sure by it here first, but like I said, I didn't see one!!!

As far as the whining comment, I thought that was a little nasty, but whatever...

I would imagine that most of you guys think of me as a bratty 16 year old that has had everything handed to me, and IF that is what you think, then ok.

For all of your info, I bust my a$$ 5 days a week at what ever jobs I can find earning money for my FAMILY, and what I have left over, is put towards tractors, the economy sucks, and I am feeling the brunt of it! Just trying to find a nice deal, not trying to upset anyone, but I have apparently done so...

I apologize to the readers of this board, and more importantly to the fine lady that allows us to do this! If you are reading this, you probably aren't told this enough, but thank you!

Bryce

Well, we had thought about it, but my dad looked at the gasket and said that it had clearly been leaking, and it appears to be very old. Do you think that it is saveable? I have heard of it being done, but we don't really know what is acceptable or not? Bryce

If it is a metal gasket you first put in in your home oven cold then heat as high as it can go. Let it cool down in the oven after do not open it till cool. Then paint with albumin paint 5 times or so. Did that on my Farmall BA which is half B and half A

Hmmm, well, we may just try that! It is one of those layered gaskets, metal-something-metal.

How long does it need to be baked? I could probably super heat it in our toaster oven in about 10 minutes!!

Bite the bullit and get the jd head set, you don't hesitate when your truck needs eighty bucks worth of gas to retrieve these old relics, and it tax deductible.

Bryce:

You need to look at the serial number breaks on the JD "B" tractors. The original head gasket number is a B368R. It is used on serial number B1000-59990. Basically all of the un-styled JD "B" tractors. Actually used more years than some of the later gaskets.

The styled tractors had more serial number breaks as the engine was changed over the years.

You can look this up on jdparts.com. It is a PDF file you can down load and store a copy. If your signed up you can also price the parts and see if your local JD dealer has them.

On YT the serial number selection looks like this:

Description: For tractor models B, BN, BW (To S#59999)BO, BR (To S#328999).

That means that this set is used UP to 59999.

I was off on the price by a few dollars. $195.14

As for using the old gasket. If it is not torn you can try using it over again but it may not work and you will have to redo all your work over and maybe dump water/antifreeze in the crank case.

Do use COPPER coat on any head gasket you do use on any JD two cylinder. Hang the gasket up and spray several coats on it allowing each to dry until it is tacky between each coat.

Sorry for coming down on you but posts asking about other places to buy parts when YT sells them just kind of ticks me off.

Now I do buy parts at other places but I don't advertise where or when on Kim's site. I just don't feel that is the polite thing to do.

Call me, I know someone who has original copper gaskets and wants to sell them. He has no need for them. My phone is 217-778-8560. Thanks.

I just went to the website I consider the authority on lettered series JD parts outside of mother deere and they only had the complete set and they were a few bucks higher than this website. Unfortunately when it comes to gaskets your options can be very limited.

To everyone else, yes I do use this site for parts from time to time.

I will respectfully disagree on using the copper product. I have had failures due to using the product where I had none otherwise. It's snake oil, in my book. You will have no problems installing the head gasket dry. I have two cans of the copper product I would give someone. It's simply not necessary on these tractors. Forty five years of experience on these tractors tells me otherwise. Mike

I could not agree more. I guess that sometimes people just do not think. Also, I would not think about all of the work of tearing down any tractor engine and then to assemble it without using new parts.
