Knowing the PRNDL switch was failing, and the pickup probably wouldn't start, this is where a customer's kid parked it!

Some toasted wires from the control panel of the grain dryer in the next photo.

Rear differential in customer's 2001 Ford tonner.
He tried driving it with no oil in the rear end.

If you look closely at the second photo, you can see the pinion has no teeth.

It's going to be interesting to see if it's rebuildable, or if it turned any bearing or races.

well that's burnt toast! best thing is to get a complete from auto wrecker, as rebuilding would be more than unit is worth.

Dozer shut off on me yesterday. I thought it was out of fuel, as I knew it was low. It did stop quite abruptly. But fuel didn't help!. Looks like it's the solenoid on the injector pump. $283, 24V, 449678A1, available from both NH and CIH! I'll go to the local diesel shop in the morning and see if they have one, otherwise will probably order it OEM. Fortunately weather is beautiful here, and dozer is sitting high and dry.

Also discovered yesterday why the front end of my TLB suddenly got "clunky" Two ball joints worn, and two have come loose! It's funny how the wear apparently gets to the point where I suddenly notice it, then wonder how it could get that bad!

If your injection local shop doesn't have it, web shows OFE has it for $67.68. Phone

Front end was getting hinky on son's Dodge Durango- took it to Les Schwab, they told him ball joints and tie rod (ends, I think), only $450 to do the job. He's reasonably handy, and watched some Youtubes of guys doing the job, so decided to take it on himself. Takes a special tool, Harbor Freight wanted 80 bucks for it. So he went to Auto Zone, priced the parts and asked if they had the tool (a press, I think). Cute young gal said, "Yeah, and its only $117.00" He started protesting, and she grinned and chucked him on the arm and said "Kidding, just kidding- $117 deposit, bring it back in good shape, you get $117 back, so its free. Gotta buy the parts here, though." They told him it was a 3 hour job, so he budgeted all day. Haven't heard how it went.

"Free" except for the sales tax.
Don't get that back on a core charge either.
Just a personal pet peeve. :)

It's always fun to come back into the shop on Monday morning and see what is waiting for you. Usually the best stuff shows up unannounced. BW

Had a customer tell us once that the differential on his truck used to leak a little bit but it had stopped leaking so he thought it was fine to continue to drive it. Needless to say it ended up having to to hauled in for repair.
