For Tx Jim or JD Seller

Hi Guys,

About a month ago I posted about the hydraulic oil in my 3010 getting very hot while I was running a wood splitter with it's own control valve. You said I needed to get a control valve with a closed center, which I did. However, now the hydraulic control lever on the tractor won't stay locked in place. Is it safe to use some twine or something to lock the lever?

Thanks for your help.

Using a closed center valve on your log splitter is causing your tractor's hydraulics to dead head. The lever on your tractor is designed to shut off when this happens. Do not tie your tractor lever to the on position unless you want to build serious heat and ruin your tractor's pump and hydraulic system. You need an open center valve on the splitter so the oil keeps flowing. When the oil is flowing it's going to build heat regardless. I wouldn't worry about it.

Depends on what type pump. If it's fixed displacement (gear pump) you want open center. If it's variable displacement (vane or piston) you want closed center.

If you have a closed center valve for the splitter you can tie the lever on the tractor to let the SCV operate in continuous(or change the linkage to let it stay in detent). The pump will go out of stroke if the required pressure exceeds standby (about 2350 psi) with no harm to the pump. If you have an open center valve on the splitter the pump will stay in stroke flowing oil through the valve in the nuetral position causing cavitation, heating and poor performance.

A closed center valve on a log splitter is the only correct valve to attach to a 3010. If you have a CC log splitter valve plugged into rear breakaways it's fine to tie SCV handle on 3010 to supply oil to LS valve. An open center hyd valve on a closed center system or vice verse is never good.

The John Deere 3010 has a closed center hydraulic system which means that hydraulic implements being used having its own valve needs to be closed center also and you NEED to tie the valve open on the tractor so that it does not self neutral. Using an open center valve with the 3010 will build much heat. A closed center system will NOT dead head when using a closed center valve.

Thanks for the reply Tx Jim. You have
been an invaluable resource for me this
year as I've gotten started in this whole
"Hobby Farm" exercise. So far your advice
has been spot on. I truly appreciate it.

You're welcome. Providing technical information helps keep my pea brain functioning. I've made incorrect statements from time to time but I welcome anyone to correct me as I think information on tractor sites should be correct information.

I'm probably being too cautious, but I've had a high pressure hose blow right beside me and it's a memorable experience. Reason I say this is with a CC valve on the splitter and the lever tied back you will have full pressure at all times in one hose going to the splitter. A piece of log dropping on the fitting that's holding back 2300 pounds could ruin someone's day. Just a suggestion. Jim

There's only 2 ways a logsplitter with a CC valve can be correctly attached to a JD with CC hyds. Either attach LS valve to tractor hyd's similar to attaching a FEL valve or plug logsplitter hoses in tractor scv breakaway coupler and bungie cord the control lever. either way the pressure hose supplying the CC logsplitter valve will have stand-by pressure(2250 psi) nearly all the time the tractor is running.
