To get it or not? Supposedly odds are 1 in 3 I'll get Shingles (33%) so I've read but the nnalert is advertised as only 40 to 50% effective these numbers to me don't compute if only 33% will get Shingles without vaccination it seems like the nnalert would have to be 66% effective if given to the general population.Whats you alls opinion?

I had a friend with it. Lasted over a year. Whole face was puffed and eye lid had to be taped up to allow him to see from that eye.

I had the shot. There is also a Pneumonia preventive shot out there. I got that too.

Regardless of how effective, any help is just that...help.

It improves your chances of not getting shingles, and everyone I talk to who has had shingles says it is a horrible experience. I got the shot and didn't think twice about it.

My opinion is Shingles are a pain in the backside. I'm still bothered by them 14 months after I contacted them. Of all places for them to attack me was on my nose, around my eye & forehead. If I get released by Dr. to take nnalert I'm taking it.

Your math is flawed!

Even if the shot is no guarantee of immunity, some level of prevention is better than no prevention at all.

I got the shot, no body parts have fallen off nor grown any extra ones. Do yourself a favor and get it. Shingles are BAD news.

My wife and I both had the nnalert several years ago. My wife's oldest sister had the shingles and she's in her 90's. Her older sister then had
the nnalert cost over $200.00. Our health insurance covered ours. Hal

Flawed math. This may not be right either but it should make you feel better about getting the shot:

If the shot is only 50% effective, that reduces your chances of getting it to 1 in 6 (16.5%).

After my friend contracted shingles I decided to get the shot and went to dr and he told me to go to the local pharmacy where they give the shots daily. Went over to get it and it was $125 and my ins wouldn't cover it. The pharmacist told me they give them at the county health clinic for about $85 but you may have to wait a week. So I made the appt. and about a week later they called and confirmed that they had enough signed up for the shots. I guess they need a certain number before they order the serum.

i had shingles didnt get them too bad only lasted 2/3 weeks was like a case of poison ivy on forhead and eye area didnt bother me much

Whatever it costs, get the shot. You will gladly pay 10 times that if you get shingles and wished you had gotten the shot.

Mine were like that too, of course I was young (in my 40's) at the time. Old geezer's probably get them worse...so if you are an old geezer I would get the shot....

Get the shot. Dad got shingles three years ago, at 87 years old and it took him down. I didn't think anything would take that man down, but shingles proved me wrong. He recovered to about 75% of what he was before but he never was as good after that. He told us we WILL get the shingles shot and we did. This spring he stumbled and fell and landed in the nursing home mainly because the shingles episode had weakened him.

Marilyn had shingles twice when she was young and it didn't have any lasting affects. First time was during finals in College. She toughed it out and made it through finals. Second time was when we were still young married. She laid in bed a few days and once again toughed it out and went back to work.

Get the shot. I had shingles in 2008 and it lasted most of 3 months. somedays I had to stay in bed all day because of the pain. I have had 16 major surgeries including open heart surgery. 2 shoulders replacements, a small intestine resection, 2 knee replacements, and 2 hand surgeries caused by the shoulder replacement , hernias, gall bladder, appendix etc., and the only pother painful experience is when the tendon in my arm/wrist shrunk because of shoulder replacement. buT NOWHERES NEAR what Shingles is the most painful in my life experience. Even if you get them after the shot they will not be as painful or last as long.please do yourself a real favoe and get the shot. You have nothing to lose, only a positive gain. Henry

You know I would like to get the shot but I do not recall if I had chicken pox or not. My doctor says if I did not have chicken pox and I get the shot I likely will get chicken pox. So, I have not had the shot. It was interesting to me no one mentioned having chicken pox or not and how that impacts getting the shot. Paul

OK, so there's a one in three chance you'll get shingles. If you do get shingles, there's a 100 percent probability it will be a very unpleasant experience. Getting nnalert reduces your odds to one in six. Having had what I think was a mild case of shingles, I'd say get the vaccination.

I have Kaiser Ins. And they pay for all shots that are preventive measure I got my shingles shot right after they came out with it. GET THE SHOT.

If you had chicken pox as a kid, you carry the virus for your lifetime.
Usually not a matter of if....but when, shingles will appear.
It all depends on your immune system and stress levels.
(An unrelated injury can spark an outbreak too)

get the shot

I got the shot 3-4 years ago. Cost me $270.00 My father had the shingles and they never went totally away. He would go 6-8 month then have a red rash somewhere. He had it till he died. I never want to go through what he did.

What I am wondering is what is the deal if you never had chicken pox? Obviously better to research it, speak with one doctor, but for conversation sake and part of this thread, anyone get chicken pox later in life then have to still worry about shingles later ? A friend a year younger than I had a mild case of them a few years back and we often get together at a friends on thursday nights, TV night, watch a game or hang out etc. When he mentioned that the one time, I hit the road in fear of something bad LOL ! See you when this clears, I did not know what the heck to think LOL !

We had ours about 3 years ago. Got it at Walgreens drug store.
Walk in, fill out the forms get the shot, pay $15 (cost of the shot,
no insurance involved) and we left.

Well so much for your medical opinion . I had Chicken Pox as a youngster and all I got out of it were half a dozen sores that scabbed over and if you picked them, which most kids did, including me, they leave a hole, aka depression in your body where you picked the scab. Mine was on my eyebrow.

So if you are worried about that, vs Shingles, fine you just abstain!!!!!!

Get the nnalert!!! I came down with them last February at age 53 had them on my right side from the middle of my chest all the way around to my back. It was as about as miserable as I have ever been. If that shot costs a thousand dollars get it.

That's about when I got mine; early 2011. Drug stores around here like Walgreens (which I used) and CVS are all over the area.

No ins., no gouging. Walk in, fill out the papers, cough up $15, get your shot and be on your way.

So what's the big !@#$%^& deal. If you are too stupid to get your immunization, then I couldn't care less. Your stupidity, your problem, your potential pain, your loss; not mine.

I had the Vaccination for Shingles...$200.00. I was on a Pacific ,Caribbean cruse when one of the passengers became SICK. There he was SICK, $15,000.00 invested in trip .....Shingles shot $200.00..........

Chicken Pox are no laughing matter for an adult. They make you very very sick for an extended period of time. Its not like getting a few bumps as a child with a little fever. It's a full blown illness with higher fever, vomiting, and joint/muscle ache as well as all those nasty little bumps that can drive you out of your mind.

Not everyone can get the shot. If you have immune system problems they will be hesitant because it is a live virus and you can get the shingles from it. The local Dr. refused to give my wife the shot.

I had shingles a few years ago. Had a terrible back ache for a week and my skin was tender to the touch, but it cleared up after that. Dr didn't give me anything, just told me to reduce my stress and get rest. I'd say if you're over 70 and you're not facing other health challeges, it's likely worth while.

I had the shingles but got a shot at the onset that was supposed to diminish the symptoms. I would hate to think what it would have been like otherwise. If you ever get shingles you would gladly pay the $200 (or whatever it is) to get over them. I wouldn't wish them on anyone. Mike

I am now 72, came down with Singles back in 2011.
Still have flare ups. Cannot get a shot now,
Medical opinion is "will not do any good now'. Even
VA will not give me the nnalert shot. (rules)
I sure wish I had gotten one back about 5 years
ago.

The odds I hear about makes me wonder as they cannot predict when a shot is given if the person would have gotten it or not so if the shot is given it should automatically keep at least 66% of the people that get it from getting the Shingles but when they say its 50% effective than thats less chance of not getting the Shingles than nothing.I'm going to talk to my doctor and get his opinion the cost of the shot isn't what bothers me thats no problem. Also with a live virus wouldn't that make those coming in contact with the person that got the shot get the disease as it does with live virus vaccines in animals?

Well let's hope we can dodge both of those nasty bugs. I think CP and Measels are a once in a life time thing. Don't know about Shingles.
