Trying to remove starter from 231s tractor and can't get third bolt out. There is no room to get to it. Does it take a special tool?

Hi
Most of those Massey starters are a pain to
undo that third bolt. its kinda tucked in the
back right up against the block. all the ones I
have ever done. I have used a 3/8 drive shallow
socket of the correct size 9/16 comes to mind not done one in a couple years, a universal/swivel drive adapter, and enough
extensions to get past the motor end of the
starter. then undo with a ratchet and hope
the bolt does come undone!. a guy might be able to
use an obstruction wrench but don't have one so
never tried it. my sockets method has always
worked. have seen a few tractors with 2 bolts
holding the starter and the 3rd never put back
L.O.L.
Hope that helps a little.
Regards Robert

I'm not really familiar with the Massey's... but on the FOrd's that use that starter, I use a 3/8 drive 9/16" socket, a couple of wobble extensions and a long handled flex head ratchet. The wobble extensions allow you to get around the shoulder of the starter. Much better than a universal joint...
