Bought a 500 gal. tank, picked it up and installed it today. Called my local farm co-op to get it filled and they said $1.59. He also suggested that I contract at least another 1000 gals. for my other two tanks. Anyone bought LP in the last day or two?

What the heck!!! I phoned ten area LP dealers last week. The LOWEST price was $2.35 here in south central Texas. Also yesterday I drove through one of the busiest oil fields (the Eagle Ford Shale field starts just about three or four dozen miles south of me) that most people have ever seen! Wow, the oil field traffic!!!
How are those LP prices SO MUCH LOWER up north???
kelly in south central Texas.

1.60 is what I am hearing in NEMO and West Central IL. For 2.00 a gal I would wait.

Summer fill in Eastern Iowa is around $1.55. Probably closing out on summer fill. Someone said they filled this week for around $1.59 they thought.

Just filled my 500 gal. tank @$1.38/gal. Contracted for the winter at $1.99 max. I own my own tank if that makes a difference.

Here in N. TX. it was running $2.59 all summer. The month of September is set at $1.89 cash. No contract. October 1 always has the winter rate locked in. Like everything else you always have the price gougers especially when you are needy.

contract in august for winter @ $2.39 for house and they just filled for half my contract in St.Louis

can you say Ben Dover?

Update from my earlier post.

Just went to the LP supplier that filled my house tanks at $1.89, the September special.

Took my 50# portable shop heater over there today for a refill. It's been 2 years since I filled it last. It took 9.7 gallons @ $4.38 per gallon. Geezzzzzzzzzz The tank is on a roll around dolly and has a radiant heater that mounts to the top of it so I can move it around to where I'm working and not have to insulate, seal, and heat the whole shop. I bought the 50# to help in reducing the price for filling small tanks, but Geezzzzzzzzz.

So on the way home I said heck with that. I'll just get me some electric radiant heaters and beat that deal.

So when I get home I google a chart on BTU vs energy source. I come up with:
3413 BTU per kW/hr
91,500 per gallon of propane

Doing the math that comes out to:

$1.89 per 91,500 propane for the house
$4.38 per 91,300 propane for the shop
$3.21 per 91,500 for 12c/kWhr electricity, current rate

So in whining about it, I spent $21 per year to heat my shop with the convenience of roll around, direct access, radiant heat.

Even at these prices I think I will quit whining and go about my business.

Oh, the little 20 pounders for your BBQ grille are all over the place and they run $17.50 to $20 depending on the retailer. So looks like the luxury of availability, not having to worry about certification of the tank and all the other ya de da costs you 2x over a dealer refill. Course when you add travel time and expense, surely worth the extra; to me anyway. Besides they last a long time and I surely enjoy the grilling, smoking, and deep fryer (3 different cookers) I run with mine.

Got a fill (80%) in a 500-gallon residential tank about 2 weeks ago. Quotes price was $2 a gallon; by the time taxes and HAZMAT fees and such were added, it was $2.25 a gallon.

Here's a rundown on my invoice for the household tank:

Sept 9, 2014
Time 2:05 PM
Propane 370 ga.
Fuel recovery $7.66
Hazmat Fee $9.59
Sub total $716.55
Taxes............0.00
Total $716.55

I don't know if the Amerigas acquisition had anything to do with the two sur charges but we didn't used to have them. On no taxes funny that the state missed this one. Maybe they collect their taxes at the well head. Course unlike road tax, there are no roads needed to be built just to transport LP. The Texas Railroad Commission regulates the sale.
