How does the Oil sensory work?

How does the Oil sensory work on a 20 hp kohler command, ch20? Off oil pressure?

Where is it located? I don't recall seeing one.

I would think it would have to kill the spark. The engine has 2 mag coils, like a lawn mower. However I don't think there is more than one kill wire on each mag going back to ingition switch.

Pic of it's location would be nice. thanks

Can't help you much, offhand, with the oil shut down, but it's gonna be a little dohickey with a wire attached to it sticking out of the crankcase.

Typically, with the modern 2-cylinder "V" engines the "kill" leads from each coil have a diode in them, and connect to one common wire to the "kill" switch, and the low oil shutdown, if so equipped.

BobM,
Thanks, I'm having downloading service manual. Will try after it stops raining. Sometimes rains screws with internet.

The low oil shut down is more a part of the tractor than the engine. All that's on the engine is a pressure switch, just like you would find on an automotive application.

There is more to it than just grounding the mag kill wire. There has to be a delay or else you would have to crank a cold engine until it got pressure before it would start!

Look at your tractor manual, see if it has a low oil shut down. Unless it's an upper end model it probably won't have it.

I recently replaced the engine on my boss's X Mark. He ran it out of oil, it never shut down, told me to fix that while I was in there. Found out there was no low oil shut down! There was a switch, with a wire... Turns out all it did was keep the hour meter from running unless the engine was running.

Don'tknow the location on the Kohler but it's under the shrouding next to the oil filter on my 2 cyl. Onans.

Bob, finally downloaded service manual. THANKS A LOT. VERY HELPFUL. I found out the oil sensory only works when starting. It will not shut off running engine if it accidently runs out of oil. Basically a junk item.

It shows carb adjustment screws that I've never seen before. Need to look harder.
