When selling an item on e bay, who sets the shipping cost? Is it the seller or e bay? I won an item there and actual shipping cost was a third more than I paid. I'm thinking about selling some items on e bay, and if I have to pay more for shipping then listed, I'll sell it else where
 
It can be sold any way you want. Seller can set a fixed price, ebay can calculate a price for the seller; or it can be sold FOB seller (freight charges to be determined, or pickup only). But if there was a specific price listed on the ad, I would think you have a gripe if they charged more than that.
 
Just to be clear, I paid the listed shipping cost. I don"t want to sell something on e bay and then have to pay more for shipping then listed. I didn"t know if e bay controlled shipping like they do everything else.
 
Just to add...a seller now gets charged a fee for the shipping cost as well. It didn't used to be that way but some over seas places and some here would list an item for .99 and then charge $25 for shipping. That way they could get out of paying the final value fee as it would only be on .99 Kind of ruined it a little more for the rest of us but what do you do?
 

Ebay does not control shipping. The post office and UPS do that. Doesn't matter how much YOU paid for an item, the cost of shipping is directly related to the weight of the item, the size of the box it gets packed into, and the distance it has to travel.
 
I really don't know how shipping works but about a couple of months ago, A seller had a spring retractable air hose reel listed with best offer and shipping was $25.00.
His listing was for one reel but he had two. Since I needed two, I contacted him about buying both with reduced shipping cost.
He contacted back with shipping cost for both being $16.00.
I made an offer for two and it was accepted.
Didn't quite understand why he did that???
 
The seller sets the shipping cost. When I was selling I listed the shipping cost to the farthest location in order to be covered when I listed the shipping. Later I just listed "buyer pays shipping" and determined the shipping after the sale when I found out the buyers location. Then the post office came up with the flat rate boxes and it made things easier.
 
It's an easy mistake to make if you are a new seller. You set the "Shipping and Handling" price. Make sure you know what shipping will cost. I once made a guess on the weight and cost of an object, set my shipping price. Then discovered it wouldn't quite fit in the box I thought, next box up was considerably more. I lost all of the profit on the item plus some by the time I paid the extra shipping price (over what I had charged).
 
A $20 scale and a tape measure are a sellers friend on Ebay. Fixed price "Priority Mail" boxes from the US Postal Service are often the best way to ship expensive items.
 
Either way. Ebay has calculators built in that will figure the cost for you. But you can opt out of those. One thing you will find is that if you purchase your shipping through Ebay you get a commercial discount. With the Post Office it's the same discount at ALL online purchasers get. With UPS it's the discount that commercial shippers get. You will learn as you go along. And yes, ebay get a commission (10%) on your listed shipping s well as the "final value fee" If you have a heavy item that you know will be expensive to ship in relation to what the item may bring then you list it as "pick up only" You can still make shipping arraignments with the purchaser later.
 
I would say the 25 bucks is his best estimate and then later,after some communication with you he had them actually weighed. Sometimes I throw out a high number to cover my butt but reduce to actual cost at USPS. I have even given refund if the guy pays too much shipping on my poor estimate.It is about keeping people happy and recieving good feedback.
