So I just bought this tractor for 100 dollars from a lady friend who's husband has passed and I was told it was parked running and he used it around the farm to play on. It has a loader with lift arm each side and a bucket cylinder . It's been sitting several years. All I can tell is it has 4 cylinder gas engine. It looks to have been red in color. There are no decals on it. I see top of radiator has a plate the says Young Radiator Company , Racine Wisconsin , DOM 11-52 ( date of manufactor 1952 ?) . The 2 loader control valves at control say Gre-Sen 400 Minneapolis . The starter on left side of engine has tag that says Auto Lite 4072 . It's has a PTO in rear with some kind of single point hitch arms. At gear shifter it's says 1 3 R . Has two glass gauges for volts and oil pressure. Steering wheel offset to right side. Bicycle front wheels. Rear wheels have 6 lugs inner and 6 lugs outer rim. On throttle plate at steering wheel looks like part number on back is 5796A. Only raised stamping I see is on left side of transmission housing says on top line 9160A and below that it says A10 D3. The hood has 4 factory holes in it. Does anyone have a clue or tell me what more to look for . This things is not that big and I would think mabey 20 HP range ?

Photos are your friend - post picture(s) of it.

It's awfully hard to guess about something you can't
see.

:>)

Sounds like a home built one with the radiator and starter and bicycle tires. What size are the rears and any #s on the engine is it an overhead valve type or flathead type. Sounds like something that needs restoring just for fun.

I see that you just joined the forum, welcome to the family. You will find lots of info, advice, and interesting chat here. When you learn how to post pictures it will help a lot for ID of your old iron treasures.

Massey Harris use MZ4072 starter around Pony ,Colt, Mustang, 20 ,81 time.
Do a search for images in Google or your favorite browser.

After you download a picture wait for the picture
to appear in the box then wait until the other
little box to say "Continue" then push continue and
then you can post your ad with picture(s) included.
You have to push continue before adding additional
pictures.

now in that pic where engine looks wet and u can see red air filter, the bottom part of air filter fell off and radiator hose came loose when I let it down off rollback. but there is a bottom to that air filter and also you see that alternator bracket , well there was a newer looking alternator in the seat and I don't know if guy had intention on replacing and didn't or had it off to get tested.

and sorry for the old slingblade in pics, I forgot and left it on there and it kinda makes the pictures look confusing if your trying to look at configuration of frame and such

Its a Massey Harris- I'd post the pics on the Massey section of this board (in the gray bar at the top)- they'll know which models were offset. Or look at Massey Harris pics in Tractor Photos, in Galleries, on the left side of the screen toward the top.

If you scrap it, you will probably make some money. If you restore it, you will be pouring money into it at every turn. Might be able to sell the rear rims and tires for a goodly amount and just scrap the rest.

y hello there Gastonia neighbor lol. Yeah man I just found this place online and trying to figure out what tractor I bought. I got newer tractors we use on the farm but wanted to get into these old tractors and rebuilding them as a hobby and my 6 year old son is crazy about them. My name is Thomas, Im off HWY 18 up towards fallston NC right outside Shelby . You know how every house around these parts has an old tractor in a barn , im gonna try to find some good ones and tinker a bit

no way im scaping it brother lol. Man If I bring sumn to my house I go all the way lol, I am a tinker by blood :). May not be worth much but at 100 invested at this point , I have room to spend a few dollars. Not to mention a running tractor with loader in these neck of the woods will bring 1500 all day for your gardeners and deer hunters.

Why would you want to scrap a good tractor? They are not going to make anymore why scrap the ones that are left?

Dick2 , you speak words of wisdom as my father prob would have lol. But as always " I'm gonna fix that baby and drive it" LOL. Me and my dad always viewed fixing old junk differently lol.

Yep, hit do look like a Massey Harris, 'specially judging by the hood. You got you money's worth this time! If they are not too dry rotted the rear tires are worth more than that. Great project, and good luck. Will expect more photos as work progresses. BTW, I live in Randolph County.

thomas28159,
From looking at the dash panel you have a Massey Harris Mustang or Colt. They replaced the "22" in 1953. The Mustang has a 140 cubic inch Continental engine and the Colt a 124 ci engine. These are very collectable tractors as they were only made a short time so don't scrap it.

Ok guys today was first day I had to tinker on tractor . Checked oil and it was good. New battery and terminals in it and cleaned points inside dist cap and I replaced radiator hoses and clamps and filled back up water. Pulled off breather hose and a squirt of starter fluid and she busted right off , sounds good. So then I removed tank and cleaned it and the petcock and put back on. Now to the problem. Man that had tractor died by heart attack. There was an alternator in the seat of tractor when I bought it. I bolted it back on and belt is tracking correctly . Problem is there is no wires that I see he had running to it . And if I'm not mistaking this looks like old chevy alternator ? Below is pics of it and of the dash panel of tractor . Tractor has oil pressure and voltmeter, an on and off toggle switch and push button start. Any ideas on wiring this thing up ?

Guys I'm having trouble with pics again lol. Wife will be home in a few and I'll get them up. I took some cool pics of markings and names and part numbers in case they may help someone restoring. But any way I climbed up in seat first time today and I noticed looking down some things. I think I found some thing that will tell exactly what it is as I think it's the serial number. Stamped on top of tranny cover is < M-H >
6333A
CANADA

Also it says for shift pattern 1 3 R
But I'm pretty sure it actually a 4 speed as straight down from 3rd should be 4th.

On the right side of engine block is stamped L 26

Ok guys so I have figured out today EXACTLY what this tractor is . I have a 1953 Massey Harris 21 Colt. Model number 21G1RF . Serial number 1812 makes it a 1953 and # 812 of only 1668 ever made. So I'm stoked that I got a rare little Massey. I will be back with resto pics throughout the winter . Now the fun begins :D
