I have bought an old Ford tractor. By the serial number it's an 8n but it is one, a three speed. Two, has a brake pedal on both sides. Three, it has foot pegs and not floorboards. I've been researching parts and don't know if I need 9n or 8n parts. Could this be a Frankenstein tractor? Been reading this forum and thought maybe someone could shed some light on this. Thanks

The S/N being on the engine block, maybe someone put that engine in an older tractor. The Ford forum might give you better info than you will get here.

It's not uncommon for an 8N engine to get grafted to a 9N or 2N rear end, or the other was around.

Unless it is a new enough engine (LATE 8N) to have a "side-mount" distributor, it is virtually identical to a 9N or 2N engine, except for the governor arms/linkage.

Here's some links you may find helpful...

Was that one of Ford's "better ideas" putting the tractor serial number on the block ? I think not !

Not at all uncommon to have an old tractor like that, that has been built form parts of 2 or more tractors so you end up with a mutt half 8N and half 9N or 2N

9N or 2N that the orignal engine went bad and cheapest way to fix was just buy a complete new 8N engine as it was a direct bolt in swap than to try to repair a probably busted block engine from probably a thrown rod.

Check the date on the axle trumpet. I have a 1946 2N with an 8N Industrial engine with side mount distributor(and no sleeves).

When a model change occurred back in those days it was not uncommon to buy a new tractor with a mix of parts from the old and new models. They sent some parts aside for service parts and continued to build tractors until all of the old parts were used up. My family had a John Deere riding lawnmower built in 2000 when the leaping Deere logo changed. Half of the logo's are the old style and others are the new style. I know this is minor but the car companies would never do this.
