Mud, Mud, more Mud amd rocks to boot!

Got the JD 420 and wood splitter into a spot where it wasn't going to get out without help. Nobody else around, so my 13 year old grandson got the nod. He's never done any towing before and hasn't had all that much experience driving tractors in the first place. Was a bit nervous with visons of busted chains whizzing by my head. Or the wood splitter getting beat up on the rocks. The majority of his experience has been with my OC-4 dozer and that has a very smooth clutch (plus it was there) so that's what we used. Went as far as I could without help (not far with the 28 inch wheels on that 420) and Zane hooked on. He eased the chain snug without so much as a bump and then we eased the clutches out and never spun a wheel or a track. Pulled me through just as smooth as silk, like he'd been doing it for years. The wood splitter picked up about 200 pounds of mud in the process, but no damage.

I should have had him around to help me haul that Case home yesterday. The wife wouldn't steer it,so I had to pick the front end up with the quick hitch and roll it home on the rear wheels. She did get on and steer it out around back to get it out of the way though after I got the tires off.

My wife can milk cows, has baled hay, unloaded hay, mowed hay, and about every other thing you can think of around the farm, but bless her, she cannot get the feel of easing a clutch out and snugging a tow chain gently. She can do it with a truck with an auto tranny, but she can't get the hang of it with a tractor. She can drive tractors under some conditions but equipment operation is not her forte. Her talents are more gainfully applied elsewhere.

If push comes to shove and you can't find anyone that can let snug up a chain without jerking, chain an old car tire to the towed tractor, and hook your tow chain to the tire.

Heck I think the one we used when I was a kid was an old nylon bias ply tire and it worked darn well as I recall... The air was certainly a lot less blue from Dad cussing me out for jerking the chain. When we were done, though, that poor old tire was pretty well stretched out.

Pictures are on the Case forum. I bought it for the tires. Swapped them over to my 77 yesterday. j hikemper wants the Case. Just have to find a ride for it from my place to his.
