OT - unless maybe they include tractor related accidents

a ranking of drivers in 200 US cities - by likelihood of having a collision.

I live right near Worcester, MA - ranked 200 out of 200.

That's pretty impressive.

I guess if you're going to be bad, you might as well be the worst.

I can't say I'm surprised by the results.
See it here

People in surrounding states have a certain derogatory term for drivers from Massachusetts... There's a reason for it.

Not really.

Depends on what you call a city - Worcester is a relatively small city - it's population is about 180,000

if you go all the way down to almost half that population - say 100,000 inhabitants - there are still only about 250 cities in the US that size or larger.

Having driven between Worcester and Boston for most of my life - I can say without any hesitation that the reputation is well deserved.

People are just complete ... (insert word I can't use here).

It's extremely competitive driving. NOBODY wants to let anybody in front of them, or slow down for anybody.

Stop and let somebody else go??? It's just unheard of.

God forbid you ever make a mistake and get in the wrong lane somewhere - People will go out of their way to keep you from recovering from it.

Even in light traffic on the highway - put your directional on to change lanes and the person in that lane behind you, will instinctively speed up so you can't get in.

I could go on and on.

It always AMAZES me to drive in different states where people don't drive like this.

It intensifies with the amount of traffic.

I had an uncle that worked for one of those 3-letter agencies. Drove all over the country, and some other countries. Boston was the worst, he said. "Klingons on acid."

JR, that's the way it is driving around the DFW TX area. Only the unsuspecting use turn signals, the predators see it as a sign of weakness! LOL

Strange thing is, it's a city limits thing, get just out of town on the interstate and everybody calms down. Now they might drive 100+, but they usually do it respectfully.

The state with the worst drivers was said to be Rhode Island. I don't think it was based on accidents but on things like breaking laws , no turn signals, etc.

You are 100% on target JR. I drive down Rte 3 to Burlington every day. I come in early, get here before 6:00 in order to survive the trip, although it's ifffy even then. Total competition, you'd think there was a prize for being the biggest you-know-what. Women are right up there with the worst. Sam Colt might have made all men the same size, but the SUV made the women on Rte 3 the same size too. Occasionally you see someone silly enough to ride a motorcycle on this highway. You might see them a couple times, but then never again. Whether they smarten up and start driving the Sherman to work, or have just been removed from the gene pool one never knows. Under mid to heavy conditions the road is backwards as well. Three lanes, usually the left lane is packed solid. So the guys who absolutely *have* to be there first are zipping down the right lane, dodging in and out of the vehicles entering/exiting the highway. A circus everyday, craziness at it's worst...

I would have to say that most LOCAL drivers here in CO. Are good drivers. They will let you cut in, and MOST use their turn signals. With slow ag equipment I will pull over if I have a hot rod or five cars behind me. Even the police will over look crossing white lines, and crossing yellow lines to get off the road. But you better have a SMV sign. Thinking about hanging one on my butt. LOL.

I am in southern NH and I drive down into MA usually once a week, but not usually in heavy traffic times. I get a charge out of putting my directional on to indicate a lane change, with a LOT of room available. pretty often you can watch a driver in that lane try to speed up in order to block you out even though he is too far away. So he (or she) will still charge right up then slam on the brakes at the last second as if you forced him to take evasive action and then of course they make the gestures.

After living and driving in 8 different states in the east, I am convinced that all large cities have the worst drivers. The closer to the city downtown, the faster and crazier they drive. On a trip to Detroit last weekend I had no less than 3 drivers cross in front of me all the way from the left lane across 4 lanes to reach an exit. Many more doing 10 20 miles over the speed limit etc.
However the most unnerving stae is South Carolina where no one has taught anyone how to get off the road. On right turns, they all stop halfway thru the turn to make sure thats where they want to go. ALL of them. In Ohio. a stop sign means get on thru before the other guy. NO ONE STOPS ar a stop sign. I could go on and on but you get the drift.

EXACTLY!

That's one of my biggest pet peeves - the people
who "draw the foul".

It's so hard to stay calm and ignore it all - it
can really get your blood pressure up.

Yes - like rt95 when they open the breakdown lane
for travel during rush hour.

OBVIOUSLY it's the break down lane and you should
be using it with extreme caution. People COULD
still break down - even during rush hour.

But no - people think it's some kind of magical
secret path where ALL the rules have been
reversed, not just the normal travel restriction.

90mph down the breakdown lane while the rest of
the traffic is stopped? what could possibly go
wrong.

Would that reason be named Ted Kennedy? There are some wild drivers over there!

I lived in Rhode Island for 17 years. I can attest to the pi$$ poor driving habits of that state. I've seen things most people can't even imagine. Need to make a left turn onto a busy street? No problem. Just pull out and block everything coming from the right until there's a space on the left. I-95 is 4 lanes wide (in one direction) but let's not get out of the hammer lane to take our exit. Just swoop over at the very last second. Red lights are only a suggestion. And if you do get stuck at a red light, get as close to the guy in front of you as possible.

Wheatfarmer:

Get it tattooed on your butt. Then when asked where your SMV sign is, ya "MOON" 'em. LOL!
