Example panama canel One side has different sea level. I believe its different from coast to coast. How can this be if water always seeks level?

Easy. There is a great big hunk of land in between, that has mountains and stuff in it. Miss that geography class ??

no i did not miss that class around the cape of good hope there is a great difference in feet in sea level. did you miss those classes??? I did not do well in typing class and spelling!!!

Good question. If things are refered to as being 1,000 ft above sea level, then what sea are they talking about. Maybe mean sea level?
I always thought the oceans where at the same level taking in to account tides.

The sea level on the West Coast of North America is usually about 8 inches higher than the sea level on the East Coast of North America. The surface of the ocean and its seas varies from place to place and from minute to minute based on many different factors. Local sea level can fluctuate because of high or low air pressure, storms, high and low tides, and snow melt, rainfall and river flow into the oceans (as part of the ongoing hydrologic cycle).

The standard "mean sea level" around the world is usually based on 19 years of data that average out hourly readings of the seal level around the world. Because mean sea level is averaged around the world, using a GPS even near the ocean can result in confusing elevation data (i.e. you might be on a beach but your GPS or mapping app indicates an elevation of 100 feet or more). Again, the height of the local ocean can vary from the global average.

The pacific is less than a foot higher than the atlantic at the panama canal.

This is caused by several things. The earth is not perfectly round; the rotation of the earth; sea temperatures; ocean currents; wind; and tides.

Take for example. The ocean on the Bermuda coast is about 3 feet higher than it is in Charleston S.C. and they are in the same ocean.

Look up Geoid and it will explain it better.

The problem is that it is really hard to measure. You can't streatch a water hose out far enough to do a water level thing. And if you can make some sort of measurement on the Atlantic side, by the time you walk over to the Pacific side, the tides have changed. So it is pretty tough to measure.

I was in the panhandle of Florida a few weeks ago and the GPS deal on the dash shows sea level. It read - 8 to -12 feet in places. I got the heck out of those places!!

Tides have a lot to do with it, winds too. Downbound loaded lakers coming off of Lake Superior have been known to wait west of the Soo locks for a strong westerly wind. raises the lake level enough so they don't scrape going through the locks. The tide can be a 2-3 foot change in the course of one day, at least it was on both the bays I lived by (Gulf of Corinth and Tampa Bay) And as another poster explained the Panama canal is there to raise or lower the ships to the level of the lake they cross inland and then back to sea level.

The earths rotation give a prevailing westerly wind system and this raises the water level along the Western sides of most continents. At Cape Horn the water can flow around the cape to even the sea levels, in many parts of the world there are standard coastal streams, on the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand there is about a 2 knot northerly current. Related to the effects of the Roaring Forties westerly winds.

(quoted from post at 16:38:52 08/25/14) Easy. There is a great big hunk of land in between, that has mountains and stuff in it. Miss that geography class ??

I guess I missed that day myself. Tell me what the mountains and stuff have to do with sea level please.

Mean sea level--el 0.0 in any given area is based on a local datum point--here on Long Island it is based on 0.0 at Sandy Hook NJ

other points around the US are set by the Coast and Geologic Survey

Something to do with water and the Moon..?

I didn't think water was Magnetic...but, we have a Magnetic Springs in Ohio...
Who Knew..?..!

The tidal range varies greatly between the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Panama Canal. On the Atlantic side it's 2-4 ft. On the Pacific side it's 18-24 ft.

Well where I am the Lake of the Ozarks the lake level is measure by sea level and most of the time it is around 658 so that would be 658 feet above sea level give or take a few feet

It's not just oceans. In Lake Erie my professor did a lot of work. one side of the lake can be 4 feet higher then the other if the winds are high. Sounds crazy but he showed us how the calculate it. It was very interesting.

The surface level of the water in a fish tank isn't even the same from one end to the other, but the difference is so absolutely small that it's not worth considering in normal life.

We're talking about such vast amounts of distance and water that something almost immeasurable in a fish tank would equate to several feet of difference when scaled up to the size of the earth.
