My tac is not working on my 1984 684 diesel tractor.
Pulled the cable out thinking I would find a broken cable but it looks ok. I put it back and left it unattached from the tac itself. Started the motor . cable does not turn . I know it"s all the way in. ????????? The cable is just very sightly worn where it enters the tac box on the motor. Anyone ever had this problem and what to do?

not entirely sure of the set up on a 684, but lots of those older tractors have a right angle box that drives the tach from one of the timing gears, if yours has such a box, then i'd put money on the little brass pin that holds the drive tang onto the angle drive gears has sheared and the tang isn't rotating the gears anymore... two bolts usually hold the right angle box onto the timing cover case
 
It does have a right angle box in front of engine. Will that be a hard fix or is it just a matter of taking off box and replacing the brass pin?

if it is the pin that has broke, shouldn't be too hard, just be careful removing the right angle gearbox... the drive tang should come out with it, but may not... iirc, the brass pin doesn't go all the way through the tang, it's in a blind hole, if the tang turns without the cable dive turning then pull the tang off and make yourself a new pin... brass would be best (soft) but i used a chunk of something i had laying around that happened to be the right diameter

I fix one once a long time ago. IIRC, There is a fiber spacer that goes on the end of the driven shaft that wears and allows the gear to not mesh with the driver gear. I just added another spacer behind the fiber spacer.

never done a IH, but on the last tractor i did, there wasn't room for the tang to fall into the timing case... the pin on the otherhand should still be in place just broke... parts are small and fiddly, thats all
