Hey JD Seller (and others in the know)

I made a serious error in judgement and thought I should get rid of one of the 4440's. It took me about a week to realize that was stupid.

There's a sale coming up with a really nice 4430 on it. The neighbor says those aren't as good of tractors. What's the scoop on them? I'm sure they have the 466, don't they? That makes the engine a no brainer. Nothing else can be that different, can it?

Really it would be a backup tractor. Maybe run the round baler or such. It wouldn't do any tillage or have a loader put in it.

The JD 4430 has a JD 404 engine. Kind of a big brother to the JD 4020 motor. A JD 4430 is a pretty good tractor but the JD 4440 is better. The JD 466 motor starts easier and had a much better torque curve. The rear end is heavier in the JD 4440 too.

I do not own a JD 4430. They just where not as good of a tractor as the JD 4440. I own 4 of them.

4440's were very good tractors nick name the " Iron Horse" and 50 were also good but 55 series were even better with better flowing cyl heads for better fuel economy.

I agree with the others, the 4440 and the 50 and
55's were great tractors. In my opinion, the 55's
were the best that Deere ever made. With that being
said, I have a 4430, 4020, and 2510 and like all of
them. I'm just too poor for the newer ones. A
neighbor recently traded a like new 2755 for a 6310
and paid a lot of difference and after less than a
year he wishes he had his 2755 back. I even got to
say, I told you so. I tried a week to persuade him
not to trade, I wouldn't have traded even.

I have a 4430. The radiator is too small they like to run hot.If it's 100 outside you might as well just stay in the house. You can't run them faster than second gear in second range. Also the AC condenser is too small and they don't work well with 134A. Mine is still on R12. I have much less AC trouble than the guys I know that converted to 134A. They also blow more smoke when you start them compared to the later tractors.

I have two 4430s and never had heating problems. I had very few problems with them. I had an 800 12-30 mounted planter on one with lift assist. When both boxes were full of beans, I had a hard time lifting it. I did not keep that one or the 500 I had before very long.

Mike I will disagree on the JD 2755. I have a JD 6400 and it is head an shoulders better than any of the older Mannheim tractors. That JD 6310 should be a much better tractor than a JD 2755.
If your friend is having issues then I wonder about how it was cared for before he got it.

The engines will start much better. The wet clutch in itself is a BIG jump ahead. Having all of the shifting levers off the floor makes getting on and off much easier too. Much faster hydraulics than the JD 2755. Simpler too. You no longer have the hydraulic pump out the front of the motor.

My JD 6400 has over 16500 hours on it now. I have done very little other than normal maintenance to it.

I had a JD 2640 that I like how it operated but I had contentious problems of one kind of another with it. Mainly hydraulics and the steel internal lines in the transmission. I think I had it split 11 or 12 times in the ten years I owned it. I bought it at 1600 hours and sold it with under 5000 hours on it.

Most people around here that have 6310 and 6320's they spend a lot of time in the shop, mostly hydraulics. The 55's never have any problems. The newer ones are nice to drive, just not very dependable. Actually most of the JD's around here that are newer than the 55's are in the shop a lot. Neighbor that now has a trouble prone 6320 had a 5525 that he bought new that was pretty much junk with 1700 hrs. Traded it for the 6320 and it's not a lot better. There is a 7520 also in the neighborhood that is a shop queen too.

It looks like I am better off waiting it out and getting another 4440. I don't need something quite that big but they sure are reliable machines. I'm awfully partial to that 466 - everything (that's green) here has it but the 4020.

I have 2 4430's that my dad bought when they were a couple years old. They have been trouble free and don't run hot. I think they are good tractors but I wouldn't argue the fact that the 4440's are better. I have never had the chance to be around one but from everything I've heard they are a better tractor. If you could get the 4430 cheap enough I'd do it. I've heard the 4440's had better rear ends and engines but I wouldn't call the 4430's bad by any means either.

If you do not need the horsepower of a JD 4440 then look for a JD 4240. Still a JD 466 but a little smaller rear end and lower horsepower. They usually sell slightly cheaper.
