Push-Pull Bar

I want to make a tow bar (push pull) for moving my rapidly growing number of dead tractors around, a chain works fine but SWMBO gets grouchy on days that end in Y. How long should I make it and what do you suggest on the thickness of materials. I don't have any scrap material to start with so I'll be getting new. Not going to be moving heavy equipment with it, IH 706 is the biggest tractor I have.

Thanks
Nate

For a inserted / indexable push-pull barI made one about 6 foot long cause dad has one 8 and 12 foot long. I used 1/4" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square tube about 4" long. I then inserted a 1/4" x 2" x 2" about 2" long in to the larger tube. Drill a hole for a 7/8 hole for a 3/4" pin. Pull the smaller tube out and rotate it 90 degrees and reinstall. Drill another hole through the smaller tube. Get some 1/2" x 2" flat bar and cut 4 of them about 12" long. Drill a 7/8 hole for a 3/4" pin 1" from the end of the flat bars. Weld the flat bar on the end of the tubes it will look kind of like this =-----= . Now the reason I like the insert stile push bar is i can rotate it because some tractors have a horizontal pin in the front instead of vertical.

Some have posted pictures of their tow bars on here. I wish I had seen theirs before I made mine. You might do a google search to find the pictures.

I Have had several different push bars over the yrs of various lengths. Seems about six foot work best for me.
The most handy thing on mine is a drawbar pin on a light chain welded to each end of the bar. Never any running around looking for a pin that way. clint

I needed one in a hurry. Had a wagon reach and some scrap flat iron. took 15 min to weld it together.

I made one similar to Loren's.Used 2 1/2" thinwall square tube.Approxamately 6 ft long.3/4" hole/bolt in each end.Have also made some small, simple 'brackets' to bolt to the front of a tractor,as well as drawbar to drawbar.Have have lots of tractors with it. Steve

Welded one together in a hurry about 30 years ago out of 1-1/2" pipe and scrap iron. About 8' long, I was always going to make a better one, but never did. Mine works.

I would say 2.5 box tube would work for you. 5/16 or better wall thickness. Probably 3/8 or 1/2 for the plates that have the holes.

As far as SWMBO I have never asked my wife to do the push pull thing and hope I never have to. She did help me tow one earlier this year as was not happy that the towed tractor was dirty. On another side my father and I who worked together VERY well could never get the push pull thing down.

Just plain old 1 1/4" galvanized pipe with a 1/4" x 2" plate bolted on both top and bottom to form a clevice. Was about 4' long. Used on fron ene of pickup to push fully loaded hay wagons to the elevator for unloading.
