4430 shifting without clutch does nothing

Hello everyone, I have a 4430 JD that recently stopped shifting when I slide the lever sideways either from one to two or three to four. It is a quad range transmission and after I got back to the yard I drained the Hyd fluid and checked the sump screen and Hyd filter. Both were quite clean with not much debris. In the oil there was a few pieces of what looks like flakes from a clutch and three years ago I had them done at a reputable local JD dealer and I know at that time nothing was flushed out so I"m hoping those pieces were still from that episode. Any advise or suggestions as to what the problem is and how I can fix it would be appreciated! Thank you

Check the mechanical linkage. It is not uncommon for the linkage to come unhooked or the pivots to break. Then the side motion does not do anything as the actual valve on the side of the tractor transmission is not moved.

Open the small right hand door. You can reach in and work the shifter an still be able to see the linkage under the cab.

Is your tractors serial number below 044582? If so clamp(parts key 21A) might have broken allowing line(parts key 22) to come out of one of the holes that is if clamp hasn't ever been changed to newer style.

There's a clutch pack in there that allows you to shift from 1 to 2 and from 3 to 4 without clutching. Those clutches went out on my 4040 with just over 10,000 hours. That job cost me around $3500 in 98 or 99.
