560 fix, scrap, or sell as is

I need advice. My 560 (gas) has recently died because of no compression. So im stuck with the decision of what to do. Fix it- put new sleeves and pistions in and find out what else needs replaced. Or Part it out and sell the rest for scrap. I dont need the tractor and dont plan on buying anything to replace it. Any movable joint on the tractor is badly woren and the tractor is general is in poor condition. Even if i fix it i will still sell it. So what would be the best financial decision? What could some one part it out for?

Cut your losses and sell it now you will never get your money out of what it will cost to o/h it.Someone will buy it.

Maybe call a tractor salvage yard or two to see what they would pay you for it, then advertize it "as-is" on Craig's List for another 25 to 40 percent more.

You could get more for it by parting it out if your time is free. If you have other alternatives for your time I'd sell it as-is.

Best financial advice in my opinion, would be to sell it as is. A dollar spent fixing it up will not equal a dollar in return selling it after fixed up. As for wether it will go to a fixer upper or a parts yard will kinda be up to the buyer. Let them decide that for ya. Atleast that way the tractor has a chance to be fixed up. Start parting it out yourself, and it won't. If your just wanting out of it, and thats the way it sounds, no need to mess with parting it out. Sell it as is, be honest to the buyers, and get what you can out of it.

Take it to a consignment sale. Some fool will think
it's a classic and want to sink the money in to fix
it up.

Do not try to par it out yourself. Some parts will disappear. buyers and lookers will take up too much of your time because they are too cheap to go to the salvage yard. I parted out a Ford 150 and let a fellow take out the shifting tube. He took the power steering unit/gear and everything including the steering wheel for $15

I would sell it AS-is at a consignment auction. Tell them like it is. The IH 560s are starting to climb a little for the guys wanting to collect something other than the letter series. Now they are not bringing high dollars but I will bet that it will bring much more than scrap value.

Shoot some 30wt in each cyl and drive it on the trailer, get to the sale and do the same thing. Tell them it is week and let it go. I am thinking you will get $1100.00.

Engines do not typically "die" from no compression.

While that may be an observation, it is not a root cause, and loss of compression to the point it won"t run doesn"t normally happen instantly.

Unless there"s a MAJOR problem, such as a broken camshaft or timing gear train.

I would think a good used engine wouldn't be terribly hard to find if yours is beyond practical repair. A good engine out of a 715 gas combine is a common swap in this area. Mike

I guess "died" isent the best way to describe what is happening. It still runs at idle but if i put it under a load then it will stall out. Also as it gets to operating tempature it gets weaker. If i take the dip stick out while its running it will cough up oil and air, it would look like a diesel under a load, black smoke out the stack. Im doing a compression test before i do anything with it to be 100% sure. Im very sure it is the issue though.

Im not in a hurry to get rid of it. I would enjoy doing a complete tear down and selling it for parts and scrap. But the way it sounds selling it as is seems to be the most recommended.
