Broke a spindle on the 1850 today. The hired hand said it was a bit of a shock to be on three wheels all of a sudden like...................

Upon examining the spindle, it has been broken better than half way through long enough that the break was glass smooth. I expect it was broke when I bought it a year ago. Might have been even more of a surprise if it had broke when I had a bucket of gravel up in the air...........................

That's one strong chunk of steel to go as long as it did with the loads I've been putting on it loading gravel. Must mean I not abusing it while loading anyway.

I had one break on mine a few years ago like I've never seen before. The tire started rubbing. I thought there was a bearing out. I pulled the hub and the spindle was cracked most of the way through between the wheel bearings. The darned thing lays out here with the inside bearing and seal still on it.

I had a spindle break on a 4020 some years back, while lifting a HEAVY Kewanee "potable boiler".

That tractor has FAT front tires, which were squatting under the load, and when the spindle broke the tire rebounded and the wheel and tire assembly went airborne... Could have very well killed someone.

Not to mention the end of the front axle slamming in the ground. WHAT a ride.

A good portion of the spindle was an old break, just like you saw.

Had a couple of them break on my 620 JD. Last time I had loader up about half way with a pile of pole barn steel on the pallet forks when it let go. Threw me up off the seat and the tire bounced higher than the muffler. I replaced all the bushings and thrust washers when I put new spindles in it and haven't had one break since. I replaced it with an A&I one.

Haven't lifted the front end up yet. If there is enough spindle on the tractor end to jig the thing up, I may try welding it to see if I can get it straight enough to use in an emergency. Guess I know what I'm going to be doing tomorrow!

I had one break on a Massey 150 with loader. Replaced with a A&I spindle. That one broke again. I thought I was just using it too hard. Tried another and that one broke in a different place. Made one good spindle out of the two A&I spindles and it soon soon broke. They were made in Mexico. I put in a used 150 spindle that is still going strong after 12 years.
