Quote from my sons facebook: "I've handled cattle all my life, and yet at times I'm still amazed at how much stupid can be in one aniamal".

He was referring to an angus/holsien cross we are raising for beef. She got loose and there was no one around to help him catch her.

Ever try that with a half blind cyco 750# pony that only know how to move off at a run?
Almost takes a buffalo fence to slow her down.
I "KNOW" what your son means and feel his pain.

I think another thing that amazed Jeff was how STRONG a 350 pouind angus is compared to a dairy breed the same size.

Donald, In the Immortal Words of writer John Erickson the writer of the "Hank the Cowdog" Series, when God made Cows, in the first book I think.......
And God made the Cow, and HE Smitten them with Dumbness.....And Low were they Dumb!.....No Truer words were ever spoken!

Haven't been around cattle since I was a kid, but I well remember thinking that that much stupid in something so big was a damned dangerous combination.

My 20 year old daughter is working for the summer at a bull collection farm while goes to university to be a vet.
She says they weighed a bull in at 2850 lbs.last week. She tells me that the Jersey bulls are meanest of all the breeds. The dinner table conversations can be quite enlightening.

RVS,

LOL!!! Had an old timer around here that used to say, "my nephew is ornrier than a yearling jersey bull who just had his horns cut off".

I think sheep act even dumber than cattle, but at least they are smaller. Unfortunately, when they outwit me what does that say about me?

When I was in my 20's and started raising cattle I was having problems getting them into the barn for AI. I had tried many times to no avail. My Dad came over and watched for a bit and asked "Do you have any grain" He took a bucket of grain and coaxed them in the barn in about 10 minutes. Then turned and said to me [b:e16db23f14]"the first thing you have to do is show them you are smarter than they are"[/b:e16db23f14] That was over 40 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday

I've been around cattle my whole life - the second half by choice. I will agree one by himself is 100 times worse than 10 in a group.

Growing up we had hogs and I have vowed I'll never have one the place as long as I have anything to do with it. Cattle can be stupid but you can beat an hog to death trying to get one to go through the same gate that the rest of the pen just walked through.

I've always said, I don't want to be around anything bigger, stronger and faster than me that doesn't have a throttle, brake or kill switch! LOL

Yeah, a holstein calf, you get their head, you can make them do what you want. An angus, you can make her lay down, as long as you don't mind being in the heap, and getting your ribs half kicked in waiting on someone else to get her back half.
How do I know?
Guess.

Dad always said "If you have any kind of livestock, someday they're gonna get out!" Dad knew what he was talking about.

I had a 320 pound barrow on custom finish in a separate pen from the other hogs. One day, he decided to bust through 3 gates and walk up the loading chute and go for a walk around the neighborhood.

A week later was his date with the butcher. It was a little fight to get him through the first gate. Second gate was a bit worse. Third gate, he decided he wanted to go back to where we started. Finally, third time through the maze, he went into the chute. Still took a lot of sailor talk and perseverance to get him on up the chute and into the trailer.

Get deadstock and you don't have to worry about it. I have yet to see a nice beefsteak walk out of the freezer by itself. LOL!

:>)

Sounds to me like you needed a good electric cattle prod. A couple of good zaps to that tender area under the tail gets them moving quick. LOL! BTDT
