OLD Time Plow day

Will try to post a picture I ran across the other
day. It shows my grandfather and his sons. Near
the town of Orland, IN.

That is a real neat picture. I would have a copy enlarged and frame it. Then keep the original in a very safe place. You can not place a "value" on family pictures like this one.

Neat picture, Orland is only about 15 miles from me and Wall Lake Tavern has some really good fish. Looks like a very early Farmall M(1939?), an F-20, two H's, and another M. Grandpa must have been a Farmall guy! In this part of the country they'd have turned over 12 furrows every round and that would have been huge back then.

Very neat pic. There's something different and better about an old picture taken back when those tractors were in their heyday, and a modern picture taken of old tractors plowing today. Did you notice the different rear tire patterns? Did the third tractor have more traction problems because of that tread design? We'll never know. Jim

Im not positive but I think that design of tire possibly would be a S-3 tire which was synthetic rubber during WWII. I had one on my ZA MM that I removed when I restored it. It was hard and dried out. My dad said the S-3 tires slipped a little more when pulling but wore like iron. There was one on my uncles 1939 ZT MM which I think he said was an original, its still on there.

The tires on the third tractor have the same pattern as the 9N I have that my grand dad bought new in 12/39!! I still have the 9.5 x 32" tires on it, but need one new one. Gotta be nice to the wife or just put it on the card and surprise her!!

Paul, I can agree, re:WLT & Fish. A few years ago, the Tavern was owned by the oldest son(now passed)of the 4th Farmer in the picture. The next son currently has the 'Brat Shop', know that one?
That is my father on the H, with the funny tread. p.s. I am originally from Bronson.

If I remember right a neighbor had those tires on a JD B. I think they were Firestones. He said they didn't have as much traction. The Oliver 70 owned by our local threshing show has them, come to think of it. They ride a little rough kind of tread induced rough ride. Jim

Yes, Well almost. I think it's a F-20 (my Uncle Fred)but not sure. An M in the rear, with a 3 bottom. It boggles my head to see one tractor/plow turn that many furrows today.
