Kohler KT17 oil consumption

Currently using a lot and smoking bad, has been for some time. I figured rings shot at a minimum. Last night I pulled the spark plugs and one looks perfect and the other one had large deposits of carbon and soot. This tells me the issue is mostly one of that cylinder only. Any ideas what it may be? What is the easiest way to verify? If the cylinder walls look ok, could it just need new rings on that piston? Anything else?
Thanks, in advance, Roy

Those engines had a terrible reputation, Series II was some better.

I"s more common for one cylinder to fail, IIRC, the RH one, viewed from the flywheel end.

Parts are big bucks and getting hard to find, you might just be better off upgrading to a Briggs or Honda V-twin.

Mine was doing this the other year. Take a compression check. This will eliminate a lot of what you're uncertain about. Mine turned out to be a bad crankshaft seal. The crank case has to be under a vacuum if not it sucks oil up into the carb and smokes really bad. If your air cleaner is all oily I'll bet this is your problem. You think the worst and it's only a cheap fix. I replaced both seals when I fixed mine. Sure I had to pull the flywheel off but that's not a big deal if you have the tools to do it.

Actually I would consider "down grading" to an older K321 or K341. Those engines last forever and are cheap to rebuild when they finally do wear out.

IMHO the KT17 series 1 and 2 are both a POS compared to the engines they replaced. The parts kit for rebuilding either one is almost as (or more) expensive as (than) the parts kit for a Chevy small black V8.
