Massey Ferguson 510 transmision replacement

My father and I are looking at replacing the transmission on a Massey Ferguson 510 combine but can't find any instructions or diagrams. Any suggestions or helpful hints to make the process easier? Thanks for any help.

Not really a fun job, but not impossible.

You have to take both final drives off to pull the drive shafts out of the transmission, take the shifting linkage off, and then use a floor jack to lower it out and put the new one in.

Sounds simple, but its really not, good luck

I am changing out/rebuilding a 3sp gear transmission right now with a 550 Massey which is the same transmission if the 510 is 1968 and newer.

You must remove the right final drive. pull out the axle and then remove clutch, Disconnect shifter and clutch control rod.

P.S> to Remove the clutch remove a bolt on the left side brake cover for clearance]

With the clutch off remove the left transmission housing. This will allow the transmission to be slid out using a floor jack or transmission jack.

[I use a 2000 pound harbor freight transmission jack that lifts 31 inches. They cost around $279 but they are worth every cent.]

I have done this 3 times now over the years and it works.

P.S> if the belt adjuster rod is frozen or stiff in the transmission DO NOT drive it out of the transmission because it will break off the area were it pins into the transmission.

[I just made that mistake and its costing me some serious change to correct my ignorance.]{I know better but did it any way and feel like a fool]

If you have questions I will be glade to help I have a factory service manual and have been in Massey gear transmissions 3 times.

P.S. I also just found out that AGCO no longer carry's the differential bearing for a Massey 510/550 gear transmission. But if you have a bearing place I think they can still be found.
