Ebay seller

I just had an email encounter with a seller on ebay. I bid on and won a drawbar for my cub on Ebay . I immediately went to paypal and paid the required amount. After shipping the drawbar the seller sent me an email wanting more money for shipping. The requested amount was equal to a 10% increase in price. After checking with Ebay they said that was a no-no. New I have recieved emails saying he will file a complaint and hinting at bad feed back. I could care less about the complaint and feedback since I only buy on ebay and pay immediately but I am still mad as all get out. I think he is running a scam to increase his profit and keeping stated costs low to increase sales What do ya'll think?????

Don't do anything. The seller can't leave negative feedback. Even if you type in NEGATIVE ,eBay will remove it. Deal is over he will learn to figure shipping better from this experience.

Dr Sportster is correct. Do exactly as he said since you already contacted Ebay about it and they told you the seller did something wrong.

I bought a part for my Farmall and when I won the auction there was an extra $2 tacked onto the bill (it was it's own separate line different from the winning bid & shipping) that wasn't mentioned at all in the auction. When I inquired to the seller what the fee was for they dropped it immediately with no explanation and I paid the bill and received my part in a timely matter.

I have found that the shipping calculator in Ebay does not match the one in Palpay when printing a shipping label. I sold an item on Ebay where there was a $13 difference using the Palpay calculator to print the shipping label. I could not "eat" this amount of monies, so I asked the Buyer for it and told him it was a deal breaker. He reported me to Ebay and Ebay called me and I told them to look at each calculator and see the problem. Ebay gave me "credit" for the difference and I shipped the unit.

Ebay only works one way, for the seller. They may say it's a contract, but they are full of crap. They'll force you to pay, but they won't force the seller to honor the contract.

I bought a set of fenders. Paid via paypal. Seller raises shipping $150. Fenders were $200 + $100 shipping. So, I told him no, to honor the contract. He sends my money back and won't ship. Tells ebay when I file a complaint that I would not agree to shipping.

I've been an Ebayer Seller for over 10 years, and what he is trying to do is a NO NO. It's a sellers responsiblity to weight the item and get the shipping cost, if he stated the price in the listing, then that's what it is and if when it comes time to ship the item and he was wrong and it cost more, then he has to eat it. No if ands or buts, coming back to you for that is again wrong. Don't pay it!!

This is true and I don't think you have anything to worry about. If he shipped the parts for what you paid him then he essentially accepted it, whether he lost any or not. Anytime you sell something on ebay, there is a chance that the shipping might be more than what the estimate charges. This is called the real world, lol. Therefore this seller may want to change how his acutions work and manually estimate the shipping after the auction.

Tell him you paid the full amount of the auction which included shipping and if he continues to harass you for more money you will open a complaint with Ebay.

If he doesn't stop, open a complaint. Ebay may kick him off.

My experience with Ebay has been just the opposite. Most recent - bought an item for my dog. Ad clearly said size M. When it came it was a large. Sent emails to seller, no response. Opened a complaint with Ebay. Got a full refund.

Sadly, the real problem is with Ebay, not the seller. Ebay has a problem with their shipping rate calculator. I have been a buyer and a seller on ebay for years. I do get the weight right, and I do get the dimensions right, but when the seller buys the item, it loads a shipping rate that can't be done. I sold some parts and it missed the rate by $100, when Buyer complained to ebay, I got the explanation, without buyers, there is no ebay. ebay protects the buyer, not the seller. I got screwed. Now I double the weight and return over charge.

Hi I wonder if the problem was he forgot to figure in the 10% ebay takes in commission now from shipping costs, as well as paypal and selling commission!.
Regards Robert

How long ago was that? In the last 2 or 3 years Ebay and PayPal have added much better protections for the buyers to receive full refunds.

It doesn't really sound like a scam because a scammer would try for much more than just an extra ten percent. It's probably an honest mistake on the seller's part, and the seller is responsible to take that loss, not you.

If ebay gets involved there is no way they can make the seller complete the transaction. Ebay will most likely cancel the transaction and issue you a full refund. If the seller is allowed to re-list the item you can bid on it again if you want to, but the seller will likely re-list it with either the correct now higher shipping cost, or a higher "Buy It Now" price.

The question for you is can you buy another drawbar at less cost some place else? If you can, then let the transaction be cancelled, get your refund and then buy one elsewhere.

If you won the auction at a real bargain price, lower than your maximum bid was even with the additional shipping added on, then I might consider paying the additional shipping just save time and complete the transaction.

It's your call, I believe you are in the right, ebay does too, but there is no way to force the seller to complete the transaction, a full refund is most likely.
Good luck.

colekicker, You got that right. They don't care about the seller. You can't leave negative feed back to a buyer. They can be a non payer and still maintain 100% feedback. Have had it happen numerous times. Oh well, have been selling for about 10 year's and I'm about through anyway, can't afford their high commissions. Can sell at a local consignment for about one half their rates, and do just as good.

It is difficult at times to correctly estimate shipping charges but...you can come fairly close. When I sell something on there if I estimate it too low...Im out the money. If I estimate it too far out of reason I refund some back.

just recently sold some 8N parts on ebay. I weighed the items including the packaging. Ebay estimated the shipping (or let the buyer calculate it) On a front bumper their calculation was $44 & change. My cost for shipping thru ebay and UPS was $77. I only got $31.00 for the bumper. Guess who should have just scrapped the bumper. Buyer didn't have to pay the difference and Ebay said I should have over priced the shipping, but why should they calculate so low. You can bet I'm not gonna let ebay calculate anything else for me. I'll say local pick up only and put in the add that buyer must contact me before paying (if there is ever a next time for me) I realize what you're saying, but don't blame the seller BLAME EBAY and let them know they are way off. My emails open if you have any questions. I sold 12 items and shipping was calculated way low on all but the ones that were local pick up only. Keith

Ebay DOES NOT PROTECT SELLERS AT ALL. I have been selling on ebay for 6 years. If the buyer complains about any thing the seller is out. Even when the seller is 100% right and the buyer is 100% wrong the seller still looses.

Buyers DO NOT READ ITEM DESCRIPTIONS they just look at the photos and then complain when the item comes and it's not what they thought it was. Ebay is changing the buyer protection again and it will not be good for buyers. I think ebay will be loosing a lot of the smaller sellers that can't afford the return shipping on returned items.

The shipping calucator is way off. You have to add a handling fee if you want the shipping price to be any where correct.

You are better off using flat rate boxes as much as you can.

A few years ago it was much harder for a buyer to get a refund when there were disputes, the seller often kept the money and the buyer was ripped off. Compared to that, a cancelled transaction and a full refund isn't the worst that could happen. It's still not perfect by any means. PayPal has gotten a lot better about giving buyers a full refund when there are any disputes. Now they will issue a refund even when the seller totally disagrees.

As a seller, I now accept almost any returns because I know I won't get paid for the item if there is any dispute. That's a strong incentive to write an accurate descriptions, post good pictures, and point out all defects so the buyer is more likely to understand what he's buying and be happy with the item when he receives it. Overstating an item's condition might help it sell faster, but overstating also make it less likely that I will get paid for the item.
