IH M tractor points

Fill in the blanks so we can help you help your self. If it still has a true 6 volt coil and your running it on 12 volts and do not have a ballast resister in line then that is your problem.

points will get black due to age, key left on, or prematurely if the current is to high through them.

No difference in 6v or 12v points.

Could have the wrong coil/resistor combination.

Could be a bad/loose condenser.

Could be improper adjustment, set too close, worn distributor bushings.

Could be oil contamination, too much grease on the rub block, too much grease in the distributor bushing, oil coming up the dist shaft.

Could be the points were dirty, making a bad connection and overheated. Once that happens they are soon to fail.

That's 5 reasons I can think of to install an electronic conversion! LOL (still need a 3 ohm coil though)

"what causes points to get black is there a difference between 6 and 12 volt points"

They eventually get black due to carbon and arcing. If they get black prematurely, causes may be:

Weak or open condenser
Incorrect gap setting
Excess coil current due to wrong coil or ballast
Too much cam grease or oil gets on them via
distributor

Theres no difference in 6 or 12 volt points as the voltage withstand (insulation property) rating is wayyyyyyyyy higher then 6 or 12 volts anyway.
