Just wondering how well these combines work in oats and small grains? were they good machines? I am not familiar with jd combines at all so all help is appreciated!

The JD 4400 was a very good reliable smaller combine. They where pretty well balanced. Just about when you ran out of power you had the thresher full. For a 4 row corn head or a 13 foot grain table they work well. They also are a fairly simple machine compared to today's machines.

Good combines, about the only drawback with them is they were not available with a hydrostatic transmission.

Good family farm sized machine in their day. Nice 4 row machine. I"d stay away from the early ones that did not have the rotary screen on the radiator. Had over heating problems. IIRC screen showed up about 1974?

They are also a lot lighter and have thinner metal than the 6600 and larger combines so wear through happens a lot sooner. You can start to see that at about 2500 hours on them in soybean country where it takes 4000 hours on the larger models. If it has a straw chopper check the rear end sheet metal for cracking. I have fixed a few where the rear end was breaking off from the weight of the chopper and bouncing over the end rows on corn and soybean fields.

Good reliable machine. Find one that has been taken care of, and it should last you a long time. I had one, ran it with a 443 CH and a 916 flex head. Neighbor ran a 643 on his, always got by fine. But WATCH OUT for the brakes. They were never very good.
