We came back from vacation and found some gnats by the sink in the kitchen. How do I get rid of them in a safe maner> Thanks. J>

Ive heard that as well using apple cider vinegar and putting a little liquid dish soap in it. They are attracted to the vinegar, the dish soap creates a film that they cant fly. From what I have heard they lay eggs in the drain. They must not like generic cider vinegar as I didn't have a one in the bowl lol.

Vinegar didn"t catch a one for me. leaving a lamp on,on the kitchen counter, and some flypaper by the
lamp, got em all, for me

I second the vinegar water with a few drops of dishsoap added... kills fruit flies dead every time.

What you have are fruit flys. Get rid of all the fruit in kitchen, put in refig.

They could be drain flies. Bleach may not kill them as it can't always get under the gunk on the side of the drain pipe to kill the eggs. If you google drain flies there are a lot of things to try, but if they are truly drain flies it is not always simple to get rid of them.

i would suggest that you empty and bag up all those beer cans and take em to the recycle center to cash them in more often. :)

This is a common problem in restaurants and bars. They are fruit flies and they thrive and breed in the sugar from alcohol in the drains. Bars cover all drains, taps and bottle openings with plastic wrap overnight. The way to prevent the infestations is by thorough cleaning of the drains, in order to eliminate the food source. Restaurants and bars are doing it with enzyme waste digesters, sprayed into the drain opening every night.

Sounds like it could be drain/sewer flies to me, too. At work I've used liquid clorox toilet bowl cleaner as it is thick and clings to the drain pipes over night. Followed this with boiling water in the morning. Took a few treatments because as you said, if you don't kill the eggs another crop hatches in a day or two. By the way, boiling water is an excellent drain cleaner, non-toxic and won't eat the pipes up.
