Some info on white bison from a google search.

A white buffalo or white bison is an American bison possessing white fur, and is considered sacred or spiritually significant in several Native American religions; therefore, such buffalo are often visited for prayer and other religious rituals. The coats of buffalo are almost always brown and their skin a dark brown or black; however, white buffalo can result from one of several physical conditions:

*They may be albinos, in which case they will remain unpigmented throughout their lives, and may also have hearing and vision problems.
*They may be leucistic, with white fur but blue eyes, instead of the pink seen in albinos.
*They may have a rare genetic condition which causes a buffalo to be born white, but to become brown within a year or two as it matures.
*They may be beefalo, a bison–cattle crossbreed, and thus have inherited the white coloration from their cattle ancestry.

White buffalo are extremely rare; the National Bison Association has estimated that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births.

I hope that little critter does well. I think that several years ago a white buffalo calf was shot somewhere in the US???? Some urban nitwits shot it.

Didn't the white buffalo calf that was supposed to have been shot turn out to be a hoax? Something I remember about that story, it was faked or it was a cross breed... Claimed it was shot, but it was quickly disposed of to cover the fraud?

Can't remember, the details.

I doubt the 1 in 10 million number, There are about 100k buffalo calves born every year and for a fact I know I read about a white calf every year or two. Anyone else have these numbers?

oesn't look all that healthy.

I may have the rarest off all.
I have a 8-9 year old bison cow( been brown all her life)turn allmost completely white when she shedded her winter coat 4 years ago.
She stayed that way for a whole year.
Now she is mostly brown again. I lost most of the pics, this is only 1 of 2 left

I know of a place in Arizona that has a whole herd of "White Buffalo". Problem is they are Beefalo. Have a touch of Charolais thrown in on them.

We did a bunch of DNA work of a couple herds of Buffs, and not a single one of them is "pure". Everyone of them had some Bovine in them.

Pete's post down below found this info, "The National Bison Association has estimated that they only occur in approximately one out of every 10 million births."

We have a couple of albino calves born here. I think they are kept in the Jamestown, N.D. area
