This is what I saw, Out standing in my field.<br This afternoon aboot 2:00 PM
I"m located at 38 degrees 12' 49"N/86 degrees 6' 27"W elevation 721 feet.
Is this a sand hill crane? I got aboot 10 feet from it when it flew off. I have never seen one this close up.
Has anyone else had any experience with them?

That is a Blue Heron. Herons stand (and fly) with their necks folded, cranes with their necks extended. Pretty common bird, at least around here. Eat lots of fish out of the creeks and ponds.

The nearest pond is aboot one half mile away and the crick doesn't have enough water in it to supply fish.
I'm wondering if maybe it is sick and dis orientated the reason I could get so close to it.

Funk Ohio bottoms is full of those birds !Gray ones and brown ones.

Used to be a store there sold Funk U tee shirts.
As in university even had a picture of a school building on it. But everyone knew the real meaning ! LOL Local Schools banned you from wearing them.

Blue heron - lots of them around me.

If you try to keep your own shiners (bait) in a small pond, these guys will decimate them.

AND when the ... "poop"... on your car - you'll know it.

Small fish and frogs, they have cleaned out my small pond frogs numerous times over the years.

One took off from that pond, in'97 as I recall, and hit the power lines above, broke a wing, I went and rescued it, had best use care if ever handling one, it went for my foot, then my eyes, need safety glasses !

When I dropped it off at the wildlife/bird sanctuary, the guy there tossed him and the box he was in like a UPS package, probably did not fare well, bet he put it down, but at least I tried to help him, broken wing like that, would have to been set and long heal time, or become a static resident, the cost and care, they are not protected anymore, years ago they were.

Blue herons are common water birds in Minnesota. It's also a popular name for lake side restaurants.

That might be a young one out exploring the world beyond its nest.

I saw a bunch of people in a boat one day in Canada and one flew over and let loose. It is a wonder it did not sink the boat

These are Sandhill Cranes. The stupid things have taken up residence and seem to think my bunker silo is their new home.

She was on East Walnut St./Grange Hall Road, on the north side of the road next to A. B. Haggard's, but before you get to John Daily's old place.

From the coordinates you posted, you seem to be somewhere between "Pooch" Albin's and Bessie's...and a little east of what used to be Doug Brown's slaughterhouse, back in the '60's.

Buzzman,
I gave the wrong concordats fur where I are.
The correct ones are as follows.
38 degrees 18" 49" N Latitude/86 degrees 5" 42" W Longitude 721 feet above sea level.

rrlund,
Do you domicile close to Grand Rapids, Mi.?
Years ago I delivered to the Spartan grocery warehouse in GR. and on to Muskegon, I forgot the name of the one there.
If I was going to reload in Hart, or Traverse City I would do some tractor yard hopping at Ludington, Freesoil, Manistee If I went Kalamazoo the stop wood be in Wayland at Stamms yard and another one on the old road, I forget his name.
Do any of those yards still exist?

buzzeman you are close, but no cigar.
If you are using google earth, the coordinates don't match the military topographic map that is at my disposal.
Try going south, south west aboot three fourths a mile.

Buzzman, guess I better learn how to read.
The correction is as follows:
38 degrees 18' 12"N lattitude/86 degrees 6' 1"W longitude, 721 feet elevation.

Yep" but to be technical, Corydon Junction was yust where the train depot was located at the junction on the Corydon dinky track that met the southern railroad, now Norfolk Southern.
The burgs north and south of the tracks were platted oot with different names.
Can yo guess vhat there names were?

I could look it up, but I'm getting tired of playing the game.

I grew up in Harrison County, but a different part of the county. I know where Greelyburg is, and Moberly, and Nevin, and the Flatwoods, and Swan's Landing, and even Possum College. I know that Motttown was technically Mott's Station, and that Ramsey was originally Jackson City. But during MY lifetime, Corydon Junction's always been known as Corydon Junction.

Those birds are great blue herons. They also go by the name shypoke. Shy is a mongrel form of sh#t and poke is an old name for a bag. Shypoke literally means sh#tbag because when they take off, especially when startled, they shoot out about a quart of sloppy white excrement. It's probably a defensive reaction to help escape whatever is right below them.
