Some posters seem to know where others live (state,area of state), how do you figure it out? Thanks

Some such as myself do not post specific location information. The wife and I did this because in the days before the internet we had privacy issues and felt we needed to firewall certain things. If it is useful to the topic I will offer valid clues such as being in the Western Finger Lakes or being approximately 40 to 45 miles SE of Rochester, NY which is sufficient. In turn unless invited I do not drop by other posters I know live pretty close to me so as to respect their privacy. It's probably an age group thing as I think those even younger than myself (near the mid-century mark) tend to offer less from what I have seen on other sites.

Some posters are on here frequently & may have exchanged/remembered the info from earlier conversations.
I just tried that IP lookup mentioned below. It also shows me in western Ks, a bit off for actual location being ne Mn. Another lookup service shows me in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, so I don't think they are too reliable.

The internet provider you use may be subcontracted under a different internet provider, located in Wellsville.

Another way to know where someone is located is to use the modern version of this forum. The modern version lets each user fill out a profile, and if that user chooses to do so, he can give his exact location, or an abbreviated location such as northwest Kansas, or simply just Kansas.

I have often wondered, when people post pictures, etc. they act ashamed to tell others where they are located.
The only people they are hiding from is the ones that have like interest in the subject.
The first time they hit a key on the computer or send an e-mail, the super snooper watchdogs guided by FBI, CIA, NSA or other spy agencies have started a profile on them. What i'm saying is, you can run but you can't hide. The guvernment knows more aboot you than you do.

You left enough clues in your posts and I was able to figure things out with out much effort.
All your info was available in the ad for the disc mower.
Doing this kind of research is in no way a hobby of mine, but you wanted to know how people find out about your information.
