...from my new laptop. got a new Toshiba satellite, i got one in 03 and i loved it till i spilt wine on it and dropped it drying it off in 11, it was an xp (R.I.P.) then i was given an HP that i cussed and only tolerated cause it was free. i have said many times that i would not pay for a HP and i won't. i am going to go ahead and suffer thru the new 8.1 layout, it's not that bad. of course i expect the usual criticisms about buying such a computer cause they sold propellers to Russia and all, so lay it on and tell me all about what a terrible communist person i must be. guess I'm starting to get numb to all the haters.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite as well. Its been good
but its got some kind of bug right now. I need to
have someone look at it.

We've got 6 laptops in the house. All HPs and
Toshibas. I haven't noticed any difference in
price or longevity. My kid has a Toshiba Satellite
L455D that cost $279 new with Windows 7. Probably
3 years old now and on every day, most of of the
day. My Compaq CQ61 has seen so much use many of
keys wore out in the keyboard. That was $299 new.
I had to plug in a 2nd external board. Our newest
and only one with Widows 8 is an HP2000. That was
$329 new. We had several problems made for Windows
7 that would not run with 8 and we had to replace.

I have had a Toshiba Satellite for about a year. I got it after my HP crashed after about a year and a half due to an internal connection.

I have had a Toshiba Satellite s7200 for three years on 8 . Took awhile to get use to 8 but love the computer with on issues so far.

Good Morning,

My wife gave in and replaced her HP laptop with a new laptop yesterday from the Best Buys website. It's An Acer with an Intel i5 chip and Windows 7.

We went to the Best Buys store yesterday (it was a zoo since Tennessee is having a sales tax holiday this weekend for back to school preparations), but they did not have a single laptop in stock with Windows 7. Everything was Windows 8. I don't have time right now to figure out the nuances of Windows 8, so we decided to get a Windows 7 machine.

I guess we'll see.

Tom,
When xp became junk, I faced the same problem. Old computer couldn't handle windows 7 or 8. I was told to avoid 8, I wouldn't like it. Everything new came with windows 8.

So, for $175 I purchased a used dell laptop with a new windows 7 program off ebay. Payed another $50 for a 2 year extended. I love the laptop after I put a mouse on it and got rid of the touch pad. I use laptop as a desktop, love my used dell.

Over the years buying some for kids in college plus several myself, Ive had best luck with HP. Bought a Toshiba for the daughter and the display when blank and was told they had an issue with those models.

Of course anyone here may have same or different experiences with all other brands, but based on a lots of personal experience my choice is HP but yall do as you please.

Well it looks like several of us "old farts" have been buying computers lately. LOL I am limping along with the Dell I bough last week. I just have not had time to exchange it to get the sound issue resolved. I despise Windows 8. Microsoft took familiar operating systems and made them full of gibberish. I dislike the way they limit what you can do because they designed it with "THEIR" options not what you may want.

So basically I have it where the Internet works and just don't use it for much else. Have an older Computer that is not hooked to the internet for my bookkeeping programs.

I have not had a laptop in 8-10 years. We bough 2-3 when they became cheaper then. I have found that they just did not last as long as a desk top for us. Granted old farm houses are dusty places when you have lots of pets. I have to clean the desk tops 2-3 times each year.

As far as brands. They ALL are manufactured overseas. Not much difference from one brand to another on that front.
