Salt tablets

45 years ago I worked in a hot steel mill where they had salt tablets next to the drinking fountain?

Does anyone who works in the heat still take salt tablets?

I have taken them back it the day when I worked construction laying gas lines. Havent seen those things in a long long time. I guess they say they are bad for you like everything else you eat or drink or smoke or drive. What used to be bad is now good for you, and whats good is bad. I say if you like it go for it you cant live forever.

When in the Army, staff stood by water fountain and made you take them before you could get a drink. Killed my guts.
I remember first time I was given salt water when in basic . We were out on a field project of some kind, hot as blazes. My canteen was near empty with very warm water . The truck pulls up with a full bag of fresh water(so we thought). Dumped the canteen, filled with new water, full of salt. What the hey.

YES! , I not only work in the heat I LIVE in the heat (southern Nevada, eastern edge of Death Valley, CA). I take "Thermotabs", a buffered Salt supplement that is a mixture of Sodium & Potassium Chlorides along with other ingredients. I also drink a lot of Gatorade and other Electrolyte Replacement drinks. Out here where I'm at it's commonly 110 degrees F. in the shade & the nearest shade is 20 miles away. LOL!

:>)

I take them, they do help because I sweat so much, water and Gatorade is just not enough. I also take Endurolytes.

DR,
What other ingredets? All I found were Thermotabs (Potassium Chloride Sodium Chloride)
George

They can raise blood pressure and damage kidneys. I doubt if very many americans don't get enouth salt in their diets.

Greg,

How many Endurolyte do you take in a day?

Where do you buy them?

It looks like there is a small % of salt and other electrolytes in Endurolyte.

I sweat a lot, usually by noon all my clothes are soaking wet from sweating.

Dr has done many tests and can't find out what's wrong. However he hasn't done a test on my electrolytes. I have good days when I don't work in the heat. I have all kinds of issues when I work outside in the heat. Gatoraide isn't enough for me.

Thanks all. Wait a minuite, should it be thanks you ALLS when I'm thanking more than one person?
George

yikes - anybody taking added salt I'd recommend very strongly that you talk to a doctor about that.

Some people can require it of course, but only tests by a doctor can determine that. The consequences of guessing you need it and being wrong could be a greatly shortened lifespan!

If I don't take them, my body muscles cramps sooo bad. I take the buffered Thermotabs. The medication I'm on depletes the sodium and potassium from my body more than normal, so if I don't take them, I have to take muscle relaxers. Personally, I prefer the salt tabs. Just my thoughts, Keith

Ya a When I was in Basis Training. The Screws required us to take them... I chunked them... Even then I knew they weren"t good. lol. This was in 1969. Larry

George, I take 6-10 of both the Thermotabs and the Endurolytes per day. My wife picks up the Endurolytes at a bycicle shop near her work and the Thaermotabs I get at Rite Aid drug store. If you go to Hammers website you can get mail order Endurolytes. HTH.
Greg.

Scott,
Raising my BP is exactly what I need. At night BP goes below 100/60 and the room is spinning. DR has had 5 weeks and can't figure out what's happening.

Been putting salt on things I normally wouldn't, it seems to help.

DR hasn't checked my electrolytes or sodium.

While in the Navy, stationed in the Philippines we were given salt tablets. Don't remember any ill effects from them. Stan

You have been suffering with this and your Dr had not had a a total blood screen done? With your symptoms I would be espically interested in a thyroid function test. I am just a paramedic though. Dr's and nurses "like my wife" overrule me all the time. I am pretty much at the bottom of the chain in health care providers, although usually the first to show up.. Not much money in it that is for sure. Last year I made $0.00 doing it. However, I just do not like to see people suffer.

If you're taking salt tablets make sure that they also have some magnesium in them, particularly if you get cramps,

My quick and dirty for cramps is a mix of about 3/4 Epsom salts and 1/4 table salt. I use about 1/4 teaspoon in a little water when the cramp hits. Seems to be mouth absorbed mainly, so I put up with the taste.

where i come from, it would be " thank y'all " :)

Scott,
I'm leaning towards asking for a thyroid test plus looking at electrolyts. Been doing gatoraid, calcium (tums), magnesium, salt, and patassium, which is mostly what's in gatoraid.

That seems to be helping. Symptoms occur mostly when working in heat, sweat a lot to a point all my clothes are wet. Drink up to 2 liters of liquids before noon. Another 2 liters in afternoon, sometimes more. I freeze one liter of water in a 2 liter pop bottle. All gatoraid with the ice so I have a cold one on the go. Sometimes blend a diet drink to mix. Symptoms really hit me when I relax in evening and BP falls off the chart, really low.

My question is, how can I tell when I'm taking in too much salt? Normally I never added salt to anything. Only salt intake was from what ever salt was in my food. Really think I'm low on salt.

George

ya, they had those at the factory where I worked.
took them when the temps topped 120.
If you take salt tablets, double your water intake.
too much salt all at once without enough water in you puts a big strain on the body.

In hot weather, help your sweat out a little.
spraying water on yourself or dumping it over your head,
does what your sweat is trying to do without you losing more of your internal water.

In your last post, 2 liters in the morning, 2 in the afternoon in very hot weather, working hard....isn't enough. twice that much at least.
(in my shop, seems every time I grab my 2-liter water bottle....it's empty....)
....ahem, when you step behind a bush...almost clear is good, if it has color, you are not drinking enough water.

a banana with your gatorade will help hot cramping

I take Endurolyte tablets made by the Hammer co. I got turned on to these by my brother who competes in iron man events.

They keep me functional in Houston's heat and humidity. I also drink several gallons of water throughout the course of the day. 100 degrees and 70-80% humidity will get you sick quick if your not drinking enough and replacing salts and electrolytes from sweating.

Where I worked, salt tablet dispensers were next to all the water fountains in areas without air cond.which was all the hangars. In the late '70s all dispensers were removed.I mentioned it to my father who mentioned it to a MD who was a very good friend .Dr just shook his head and said "working man needs salt".
If a guy takes the tabs.by the hand full every time he gets a drink he's going to have a problem.4 a day is about all you need.In my case if I don't get enough salt, even with plenty of water,I'll get muscle cramps that will just about sit me down.

I really didn't know the answer to your question, how can I know if I am taking in to much salt? Or not enough for that matter. So I asked the nurse practioner that I am married to. Although she mostly does womens health, pregnunt women and stuff, she made 2 things absolutly clear. 1. You need to get in to your Dr and have a physical including a complete blood work up. The issue might not just be salt, there are a whole bunch of other minerals in your body that need to be checked, along with a bunch of other things that may need attention. And she said most thyroid problems are easy to fix. 2. She was rather animated and worked up over this. I recieved a 45 minute beratement. I am no longer allowed to play Dr on the internet. In no uncertian terms she told me that my job as a paramedic was to keep them breathing, keep the heart beating, stop bleading and control pain untill I got them to the Emergency Room so someone that actually knows what they are doing gets involved. Hope that helps. Even though it is over 100 degrees here in northern California, I am having a chilly weekend.

2 two liters morning and 2 liters in afternoon
doesn't count for what I drink at meals and after
supper. Probably drink more than 2 liters at meals
and more after supper. My recycled water is mostly
clear, except in the winter when I try to write my
name in the snow.
