New Holland 492 Haybine Wobble box repair

I recently purchased a 492 New Holland Haybine in great shape with
the acception of the wobble box. Uppon removel of the wobble box
I found that it was not only dry inside but rusty into the bargin. My
local dealer informed me that even they won't attempt rebuilding
these gearboxes and only sell Remanufactured units. In addition
my dealer didn't even want to sell me the bearings and seals needed
to attempt the rebuild. Fortunalty my Deere dealer was able to
supply me with the needed bearings and seals.

I have learned that New Holland no longer offers the specs for
rebuilding this gearbox to even their dealers. The wobble box is
actuially very simple. I'm looking for any advice on the yoke
preload and any shimming specs that any one has to offer. I have a
dial indicator, micrometer and I know how to use them just need
some pointers on what kind of end play or preload I should be
looking for.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I have not done a gear box on a NH 492 but have done them on the NH 488 and NH 489. If I remember correctly it was around a .005-.007 preload on the bearings.

I deliberately set them lose and measured the free pay/end travel. Then took out that amount plus the .005-.007.

The companies are making good money selling remanufactured parts. Plus many of today's techs are just parts replacers anymore.

Truthfully that gear case is real similar to the sickle drive box on the JD flex platforms or the JD 1209-1219 Mo-Cos. Have your JD dealer print you the adjustment page for one of those gear cases an it should be close enough.

Thank you for your help. The Deere specs and rebuilding procedure was easy to come by and seemed to work very well. We have successfully mowed 45 acres so far and the wobble box only gets warm to the touch.

Thanks for your help!

I have a NH 492 haybine and just last week the #40 roller chain that drives the reel broke and it wrapped up behind the gear box and wedged so that I haven't been able to remove the chain that is stuck. It appears that the wedged chain snapped the shaft in two such that the gear or sprocket can just be spun with no tension. This is part of the reel drive and I am uncertain if this thing is called a wobble box or not. Anyway, can anyone tell me how to remove gear box/wobble box from a NH 492. I read that the shaft cannot be replaced and that a whole new/used box should be purchased which is quite pricey. Seems like one could just replace this shaft and remount the box. Any help on this is appreciated.

I believe the 492 is the big brother to my 472. The wobble box is the mechanism that runs your cutter bar and is down by the knife head. There aren't any chains going to it. I think you are talking about the gear box up on top? I think you're going to have to remove some sheet metal to get to that. There are idler gears along the chains paths too that will spin with no chain on them.
