My welding greatly improved

So, since I quit farming I don't do near as much welding, however, I recently have been welding a lot since I built/modified another car tow dolly and fabricated and installed some things on a newer car and truck. BUT my welding, although it had good penetration and would hold in my opinion, just wasn't pretty looking lol AND IT WAS BECAUSE I COULDNT SEE VERY WELL. I wear reading glasses, but under the helmet that didn't work so good so I half blind stumbled through.

BUTTTTTTTT one day my buddy tells me (I hadn't bought welding stuff for years) they make a magnifying glass that fits in my welding helmet where the lens etc fits so I bought one AND WHAT A DIFFERECNE, I CAN SEE MY WORK AGAIN I CAN WELD SOOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER AND EVEN RUN SMOOTHER MORE CONSISTENT PRETTIER BEADS LOL YAYYYYYYYYY

Goes to show ya what happens when you're away from things a long time and aren't up on whats available. Those magnifying lenses were likely around longgggggggg before, but years ago I didn't need or use them so how was I to know lol

Ran out of rod and iron, have to make a trip to town

Yes, being able to see makes a HUGE difference in the quality of welds.

One of those "well of COURSE" moments when you finally realize it.

For me - I'm on the edge of needing bifocals... ok, so I'm a little over that edge now...

I'm near sighted, and need to take my glasses off to see up close.

I've always done that for everything - except welding.

FINALLY I tried taking my glasses off while welding too and my ability to see improved 100x's over.

Hard to explain - but it's a more drastic difference than outside the helmet. Like your eyes focus differently, on a different plane with the helmet on, and you just don't see anything.

But take my glasses off and I can see sharp as a tack through the helmet.

Outside the helmet, if I leave my glasses on for close up work, it's more like a strain than not being able to see.

weird.

I found out the same thing about 10 years ago , man , what an improvement !! I think I got the 2X lens so there's still one more grade I can go to if my eyes worsen ...

Yeah, you have to be able to see...ever weld with mirrors?
But not only able to see but protection for your eyes from side flashes or if someone is welding behind you..Worked for 10 years with various tank outfits..cbi..brown..american. Would see a lot of old timers that didn't take care of their eyes...no goggles using a cutting torch...tacking 'by feel'..where you turn your head and kinda look down at the spark..Lot of those guys get cataracts. I used to wake up at night with tears streaming from my eyes..burnt...because I let another boilermaker weld too close to me..

take care of your eyes when welding!

That's what you get for retiring while you could still see. LOL. I had a magnifier in my helmet at work the last 6 or 7 years.
I joined the club though.... I'm retired now too.

I learned a few things with my last session: Wife got me an auto helmet a while back. Picked up and started a weld... DANG!THAT FLASH WAS BRIGHT!! You Dummy-you forgot to turn on the helmet! Very uncomfortable for about three days. Plus eyes were very sensitive to bright sunlight. Sun glasses were of marginal help. And this was with a light duty wire welder. Also learned that a set of 2 diopter reading glasses under the helmet made my welding much prettier. No help with the flash however. Thirdly, I like to have a bright spotlight on my work, especially since my welding is in a dark part of the building.

Yes, those lenses are great and nobody over the age of forty should try to weld without them.

Another problem is helmets with small lenses make it real difficult to look through the bottom of your bifocals. When I bought my autodarkening helmet, I spent the extra money to get one with the largest available lens.
