what kind of grass is this?

I have clumps of this grass in my hay fields. It's about 50% taller than the timothy and orchard with wider leaves. Tends to stay in clumps and doesn't seem to spread quickly. I hope the pictures show enough detail. It's the green patch in the center of the second picture.

Could it be Indian grass? What state are you in? That would help, as would a better close-up of the seed head.

that looks a lot like the stuff that grows around here in wet areas of fields. No idea what it's called - we just call it "elephant grass" but I know that's not technically correct. (at least I don't THINK it is).

Curious if that area of your field is wet?

The photos aren't very clear, but with the bigger leaves, and very pointed tips, it sure looks like Reeds canarygrass to me. If it is wetter in those spots, it would make me think Reeds canary even more.

Mike, I am in NE Ohio as well and have noticed the same grass in a field we planted two years ago it was just a clover, timothy and orchardgrass blend but in the wetter area of this field the grass looks exactly like your picture. I wish my whole field was as thick as that stuff.

That timothy and brome around it is chest high. That stuff is over my head. Nothing else seems to grow within the clump but it doesn't seem to take over a field and it's not just in wet spots. My BIL once told me an old-timer about a mile east of us used to seed it in with his hay but I can't remember what he called it.

Where are you located, Jeff? I'm in central Geauga county.

Looks like Canary Grass. Decent feed if you can get it at 18", pretty stalking and alkaline after that. Loves wet, poor ground.
