Planting 4 rows, harvesting 6???

Hey guys, I've been looking for a new corn planter to upgrade from our 494A! I found a very nice 4 row planter that fits the budget. I really want a 6 row, as most combine heads are 6 row narrow.

This planter is in my price range. Is this something I should try or am I going to really going to be hating myself for not buying a 6 row?? Most of our ground is flat, and for the most part squared off fields.

What do you think?

Neighbor planted with 8 and combined with 6 for years. Never a problem.

As long as you keep your marker rows fairly close to right you will not have a problem.

We planted 4 rows for a few years after we bought a combine with a 6 row head. Never had a problem with 30 inch rows. If your not trying to set the world on fire the corn head is pretty forgiving.

Wide rows or narrow rows? Can your combine run a 6 row bean platform and a 4 row corn head?

I did it for a few years. It's OK, but the 6 row is more forgiving if you get off a bit. And, the time savings in planting is unreal. Try to get a 6 row. You won't be sorry.....

Brother bought two 6-row IH planters that he liked (Don't know the model, but they were both the same). He made a tandem hitch so he could plant 12 rows at a time, that he harvested with a 6-row header.

When word got around that he was retiring, the neighbors came and bought about half of his equipment before he could even advertise it.

I do that, have for years. Started with a 4 row planter and 3 row combine. Then bought a 4 row combine. Then the next year I went to 6 row planter.Still run the 4 row combine. No trouble at all.The only time it's an issue is if there a REALLY BAD guess row.Otherwise,it doesn't matter.

I didn't say the brand of this planter for a reason! We have a 3 row corn head now. If and when I upgrade it'll probably be to a 6, because that is what is out there to buy. Especially when a package deal is purchased. This planter is 1980's planter and in literately like new condition with a monitor. It fits the bill so I was thinking of trying it. I'm only planting between 50 and 100 acres of corn a year. Honestly I'll probably only plant between 25 and 60-70 a year.

Is that the IH 800 plate planter in indianna?I too was looking(seriously)at it.Had decided to buy it,but it's too far away.Trying to figure out trasportation.Good luck with it,hope it serves you well.

You didn't say what the 4 row is W or N.Some 4W planters were built on a 6N frame and all was needed was to change your row spacing and add 2 more units.Deere and IH and AC-DA offered them that way.

I combined some 4 row corn with a 6 row head a few years ago. Boss said It would work fine on the corn planted early in the day but would have to watch it closer on the corn planted later in the day. Seems the customer started drinking something other than koolaid as the day went on.

If you can drive straight and follow a correctly set marker, no problem. I had a 494A and 3 row head and no problem as long as I got the rows correct, if ground was not right at times had problems seeing marker track. And if still farming I would still be using that 494A but I do have the conversion parts to convert to 6 row but never did.

If you're harvesting a 4-row planter with a 3-row head, you know exactly how harvesting a 4-row planter with a 6-row head will work for you. You have to cross over passes with the planter 2 out of every 3 times around now. Only difference is it will be every pass with the 6 row head, but you'll only have half as many passes to make.
