OSHA 10 hour certificate.

As an Ag teacher I am looking for ways to get better connections with industry and to get my students certifications that would be helpful to finding jobs.
My superintendent heard of the OSHA 10 hour training and a certificate that can be received. He is asking me to look to incorporate it in our program.
I was wondering if any of you were familiar with this program and if you workplace would see it as valuable in an applicants resume.
Thanks,

I'm pretty sure my son took this while in his Trade school HVACR class. It was an online class he took sorta like a homework assignment.

It's valuable alright......as in you can NOT work on "any" federally funded raod or bridge project without it. ALL contractors have to have all their (on site)employees complete this. When they say "10 hours"....they MEAN 10 hours. You can go online and take the course....which really entails about 17-18 total hours. You take each chapter and then a test for each chapter. Some of it is tiresome and common sense, but some of it is really educational. Whenever an engineering firm puts a job out for bid, there is always the notice that all employees have their 10 hour OSHA certificate. As I understand it, it is good for life after that. I took the course. The cost online is about $100.00.

I needed to add that it would be VERY beneficial for your students to have this. A contractor cannot place an individual on the job unless he has this certificate. If your students already have this...it's a huge benefit to them getting hired immediately.

there are road projects with exemptions based on scope and a few other factors.. so to say 'all' is actually misleading.

We are working on a project right now, federally funded, but do not have to do certified payroll, etc. Just had to do the basic EEO / DBE filing.. etc.

We require OSHA 10 of all engineers and OSHA 30 for all our technicians. It is a MINIMUM for working in industry, we are thinking of raising everyone to OSHA 30.

The reason I am thinking of raising, is our customers are raising the limits, it is just easier to have 100% compliance.

on line course is convenient but pricey; check with your insurance carrier, most have certified trainers on staff.

It's absolutely a good approach for anyone that might enter the construction industry, and even for those who don't.
I took my 10 hour in 1991, it was horribly boring then, but did my 30 hour last year and the course has improved a great deal.

My son goes to a vocational high school for IT/computers - and even he has to get the OSHA certification (10 hour).

As I tell him, I don't care whether or not it's directly applicable to his career - ANY certification that a kid can have on his resume right out of high school is a good thing.

Is it more or less valuable than some other certification within the ag industry, I couldn't tell you. I'm sure others here can.

But I can say for sure, when you're doing the hiring for any position, even just one certification like that can make a kid stick out above the hundreds of other resumes piled on a desk that don't have it.

DO IT! I can tell you that having any certifications can pay off big time. If you really want to get your class a step ahead and are in an area where the oil and gas industry is booming, get them PEC certified. They can fast track your students into the oilfield and save the company that hires them time and money. I was selected over a couple other candidates because I had my OSHA 10 and PEC certificates and could start in the oil field immediately. Of course the PEC applies only if you are areas like mine(SW PA) where lots of young guys are heading into the oil field to make their living.

I took it when I was working in Las Vegas, there had been a higher than average amount of construction fatalities so we all had to go through it. Any training safety related is good. Gm, Ford and many other large mfgrs require it before you can set foot on their jobsites.

OSHA 10 is pretty old now . They are using OSHA 30 more. It is a requirment on many construction projects. Just tell the guys once you take it don't start trying to enforce every rule because they will just fire you .
