OT C 12 Caterpiller backfiring/blowing white smoke

Have truck that has the C 12 in it, was hauling a load of fertilizer down the hiway. Truck quit like the fuel filters were plugged. Changed both of them and it fired right up and down the road we went, I was following in a Pickup. Three miles later it started blowing white smoke out the exhaust and you could see and hear it back fire out the exhaust pipe. If you lugged the engine it would some what settle down. As soon as you pressed the foot feet then it would act up. Never experienced this before. Any ideas. Thanks

No EGR on that engine. Are there any check engine lights on? When it starts running poor, check the hand primer and see if you have pressure there. The next step would be to check fuel pressure going in to the cylinder head with a manual gauge.

Maybe starving for fuel=could be sucking air somewhere on the suction side; could have a restriction in fuel line(s)on suction side. Mark
